Calgary-based comedian and improviser Siobhan Cooney brings a mix of wit, deadpan charm, and fearless vulnerability to the stage. Known for her offbeat character work and emotionally honest storytelling, Cooney blurs the lines between comedy and confession, using humour as both a creative outlet and a tool for self-reflection. Whether performing long-form, character-driven improv or sharp, personal stand-up, she invites audiences into her world with equal parts awkwardness and heart.

How would you describe your comedy style?
As an improviser and stand-up comedian, I love blending dry wit, deadpan delivery, and offbeat character storytelling. My comedy leans into the awkward and honest… I enjoy using humour as a way to explore and reimagine stories from my own life. In improv, I prefer long-form storytelling, making bold choices and diving deep into character-driven, experimental play.
Who are some of your influences?
Tim Robinson, Tina Fey, Aubrey Plaza, Amy Poehler, Joe Pera.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Tina Fey – I’ve always been fascinated by her story and how she turned improv into a career.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Tim Robinson
What is your pre-show ritual?
For stand-up up it’s really important for me to ground myself and channel my character. I close my eyes and find her posture and cadence. I remind myself to take my time and own my space. For improv, it’s really important for me to connect and blend my energy with my fellow performers. Checking in with each other and playing a blending warm-up game is really important for me.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
At the Edmonton Fringe in 2024. My friend Aurora and I created a 45-minute-long improv show with just the two of us that we debuted at the Fringe. Our rule was that we couldn’t leave the stage. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had as a performer. We both grew so much, and that experience gave me the confidence to jump back into improv full force after a long hiatus.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I wrote a joke about having a stalker… a guy who harassed and bullied me and made me feel really small. Writing about it feels good. Comedy has become a way for me to reclaim my power and give a voice to the parts of myself that were too scared to speak up back then. Turning something painful into something I can laugh about feels like I’m taking that power back.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
My husband and I love watching comedy specials on YouTube! We love discovering new, up-and-coming comedians, ESPECIALLY if they’re women!! There’s so much talent out there that we don’t get to see on mainstream streaming services.
Tell us a joke about your city.
It’s hard to joke about Calgary with Red Deer so close by…
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I’m currently involved in an episodic fantasy improv show called Winging It! With Jupiter Theatre. It’s my first time performing in a genre-based improv show, and it’s been a lot of fun to explore the world of fantasy on stage. In addition to that, my troupe, Two Girls Improv, has some exciting new shows coming soon that we can’t wait to share!!
