Homegrown Business: Thor Anderson of Hygge Sauna

What is your business called and what does it do?

Hygge Sauna- a rentable mobile sauna trailer l. We deliver a wood burning sauna experience that is within a 6×10 foot enclosed trailer.

What made you want to do this work?

A wood burning traditional Finnish Sauna is not a readily available experience here in Calgary. There are a lot of saunas that are electric located at spas. More often than not they do not allow water on the rocks. So the sauna becomes a hot dry room. Löyly is a Finnish word that describes making steam from water placed on hot rocks. The essential component in a sauna is the löyly. I built the mobile sauna for people who want to have the experience. For people who, like me, wanted the experience and could find it. For people who love saunas and their benefits. For people who want to hang with their people and share a sauna. For me, I also built it for myself so that I could enjoy all those things about sauna.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

Bring a sauna to a location for the experience. We provide an authentic wood burning sauna experience in a cedar sauna. It’s simple. It’s easy. It’s available for a short time or longer.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Out clients are people who get a group together. Family or and friends. They have a dedicated event. A holiday. A birthday. A tradition. A business retreat. A camping trip. A for-the-heck-of-it moment and they reach out to us. We have a broad appeal to people who grew up with saunas, people from Thunderbay, and people who are familiar with the experience.

Demographics are not that varied at all. 80 to 85 % are Scandinavian, Nordic, men from 30 to 55 who have an occasion that they want to include a sauna in. I suspect this is the campfire version of sweating with your friends and loved ones. Sauna is about connecting, friendship and sharing.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

We charge a rental fee for the time rented. The rental spots are 8 hours minimum to as long as you want. Prices vary based on season, time of year, availability, distance,

Where in the city can we find your profession?

Since we are mobile we come to you. You will find us on your driveway, yard, campsite, vacation rental, farm, acreage, wherever we can park.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

How well does the sauna hold the heat? Is the heater front loading? How big is the unit? How many people does it hold? Is there and upper bench? Will it fit in my driveway of…feet?

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is hearing how much it was enjoyed and meeting new sauna enthusiasts. The worst part is stockpiling wood at my house. I’m running out of room.

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
