Our “Five Minutes With” feature this week is Calgary-based musician, singer and songwriter creating atmospheric pop, folk and alternative music, Evan Freeman!
Evan’s latest release Beyond the Stars is a 13 song album, in 3 parts, that touches on spiritual connection, loss, love, grief and perseverance. The title refers to places and states that defy description: infinite space, waking dreams, visions and distant memories. Oceanic consciousness, the wandering spirit. A cosmic portal, timeless and mysterious.
This album was created in collaboration with Evan’s band: Darren Young (lead guitar, MD), Robin James Cillo (drums) & Jesse Aaron Shire (bass). The songs were developed as a group and the band’s sound is represented well on the album. A host of renowned collaborators sculpted and polished the record, including Charles Spearin (mix engineer, co-producer), Arran Fisher (recording engineer, co-producer), Josh Rob Gwilliam (recording engineer, co-producer) and Elisa Pangsaeng (mastering engineer).
Beyond the Stars is the followup to Evan’s debut album Luna, which was described in the Calgary Herald as “a masterfully sculpted piece of pop-informed shoegazing wonderment” (Mike Bell) and was listed on the CBC Key of A’s top ten albums of 2016.
Performing live with his band, Evan has toured across Canada, featuring appearances at the Calgary Folk Music Festival, Smithers Midsummer Festival, the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, 3030 Dundas in Toronto and Quai des Brumes in Montreal.
