Ellen Scharf has built something rare in Calgary’s pet care world — a place where dogs aren’t just watched, but truly understood. As the Managing Director and Owner of The Beast Boutique Ltd., she brings heart, expertise, and a deep respect for how dogs think and feel to every aspect of her business. We sat down with Ellen to learn more about what drives her work, who she serves, and why — when it comes to honesty — she’ll take a dog’s company over almost anyone’s.

What is your business called and what does it do?
The Beast Boutique Ltd. helps Calgary families care for their dogs through daycare, grooming, and training services.
What made you want to do this work? What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Dogs always tell the truth. I love their honesty and how clearly they communicate without ever saying a word.
I wanted to create a safe, enriching environment where dogs could have their physical, emotional, and social needs met while their owners were at work or managing busy lives.
Who are your clientele/demographics? How does your business make money? How does it work?
Our clientele is primarily working women who adore their pets and want the very best care for them during the workday. They are looking for a place where their dogs are safe, engaged, loved, and happy.
We provide structured daycare services that include off-leash adventures designed to engage both the mind and body. When dogs are fulfilled physically and emotionally in a safe and appropriate way, they go home tired — not wired. Play, rest, routine, and constant supervision help ensure the dogs are burning energy safely and positively.
Grooming is also a major part of keeping dogs healthy, so we offer professional grooming services as well. Regular grooming helps maintain healthy skin and coats, prevents painful matting, and removes dirt and debris that can damage the skin.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
We are located in southeast Calgary near Blackfoot Trail and 58 Avenue, close to Chinook Centre. 6115 – 4 Street SE, Unit 4
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
How do you keep my dog safe while they are having fun at daycare?
Safety is our top priority. Everyone at The Beast Boutique is trained in pet first aid, and we have written safety procedures in place to ensure any situation is handled quickly and appropriately.
Dogs are constantly supervised and are never left unattended at the park, in vehicles, or in daycare. We also keep our off-leash groups small, with no more than six dogs per handler, which allows us to provide close supervision and create a calm, safe environment.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is seeing a customer pick up a happy, content dog after daycare, or seeing how excited they are after their dog’s groom. I also love sharing videos and photos that show dogs having fun playing or exploring at the park.
The hardest part is saying goodbye to the dogs we have come to love. Sometimes a dog is not the right fit for our services, and those conversations are difficult. It is equally hard when long-time clients move away or when a beloved dog passes on.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
My clients are wonderful, but the dogs are easier to train than the humans.
