After years of working in the fitness industry, Emma Cook saw how many people were being pushed away from exercise by intimidating gym culture, unrealistic expectations, and workouts that left them feeling discouraged or injured. That experience led her to open Moveology, a Calgary fitness studio focused on making movement approachable, supportive, and sustainable for people at every stage of their fitness journey.

What is your business called and what does it do?
Moveology is a group fitness studio dedicated to making movement welcoming, inclusive, and fun. We offer technical, form-focused classes including mat Pilates, barre, strength training, yoga, and mobility. Every class is designed to help people move better, feel stronger, and stay active for life.
What made you want to do this work?
I founded Moveology to create a space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels feel comfortable showing up and moving their bodies without intimidation. After spending decades in the fitness industry, I heard too many people say they weren’t fit enough, thin enough, young enough, or experienced enough to take group fitness classes. I wanted to change that.
At Moveology, every class is designed to be inclusive, with options and modifications so participants can move safely and confidently at their own level. I wanted to create a studio where beginners feel supported, experienced movers feel challenged, and everyone learns how to move properly so they can continue moving well for the rest of their lives.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Most people don’t quit fitness because they’re lazy. They quit because they feel overwhelmed, injured, bored, intimidated, or aren’t getting the results they thought they would. Moveology was created to solve that by teaching proper mechanics, offering intelligent programming, creating a welcoming environment that makes fitness fun, and making strength and mobility accessible without dumbing it down.
At Moveology, everyone learns how to move properly. We bridge the gap between physiotherapy and bootcamp. Movement should build you up, not break you down.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Our community is primarily adults aged 25–55, with a large portion of women, although we welcome all genders. We work with busy professionals, parents, former athletes, people returning to exercise after injury, and fitness enthusiasts looking for smarter training. Most of our clients care less about six-pack abs and more about strong backs, healthy hips, good posture, longevity, and feeling confident in their bodies.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
Clients can attend classes through drop-ins, class passes, monthly memberships, specialty programs, and workshops. We run small-to-medium-sized group classes so clients receive personalized coaching without the cost of private training. Our instructors are highly trained and technical, so even in a group setting, clients receive form corrections, movement education, and individualized options.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
Moveology is located at 1202 20th Ave SE in the historic Ramsay Design Centre in Calgary.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
A great question to ask is: “How do you ensure your classes are safe and effective for different ability levels?”
At Moveology, we coach — we don’t just cue reps. Every exercise includes regressions and progressions, and our instructors are trained to teach technique, not just intensity. Whether someone is brand new to fitness or very experienced, we adjust the challenge so they leave feeling stronger, not wrecked. Intensity without intention is risky, so we prioritize both safety and effectiveness.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is watching someone realize they’re stronger than they thought. Whether it’s their first full push-up, lifting heavier weights safely, improving their mobility, or finally becoming pain-free, those wins are everything.
The hardest part is seeing how many people avoid movement because they think they’re “bad at it” or “not capable.” No one is too far gone — they just haven’t been taught properly yet.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
“Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you barre classes, and that’s basically the same thing.”

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
Sewa Skincare is one of my favourite local businesses. I am obsessed with their Bao Moisturizing Body Oil, and we even carry some of their products for sale at the studio.
