Chris Holman isn’t here to make you feel comfortable—and that’s exactly the point. The Calgary-based comedian leans into the darker corners of everyday life with a style that owes as much to Richard Pryor and George Carlin as it does to the pre-show panic spiral he puts himself through every single time he steps near a stage. A regular at Yuk Yuk’s and The Laugh Shop, Chris has quietly built a reputation as someone who commits fully to the bit, even if he’s second-guessing every word of it right up until the lights come on.

How would you describe your comedy style?
Definitely a little on the dark side.
Who are some of your influences?
Locally, Dave Nystrom and Chris Gordon. Certainly two fellas I look up to. On top of that, Sam Morrill, Bobby Lee, Andrew Dice Clay, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Jason Rouse, and Eddie Murphy.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
I’d say it’s a toss-up between Eddie Murphy and Andrew Dice Clay.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
I’d say I have a few. Eddie Ifft, Bobby Lee, and Sam Morrill. Sam is the only one I haven’t seen live yet.
What is your pre-show ritual?
Panic! Try to remember my set. I second-guess everything minutes before I go on stage.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
I have a few. Yuk Yuk’s Calgary. Staff is awesome! The Laugh Shop Calgary. Once again, a great staff and I feel like I can do no wrong when on that stage. Everyone that goes there is just there to have a laugh and a good time. I also really like Good Times Comedy Club in Lethbridge. Once again, a very good staff, and they have such a fun room.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
Hmmmmm. I try to keep on top of current happenings and pick on them.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
I’ve definitely have gone down a couple of rabbit holes checking out Comedians on YouTube. From time to time, I’ll sit back and watch a comedy Special on a streaming provider.
Tell us a joke about your city.
Why does Calgary have so many Starbucks? Because they can’t get a Second Cup. Sorry, I’m an Oilers fan.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
Nothing at the moment, unfortunately. Mostly doing shows around town, but would love to get out of town sooner than later.
Where can we follow you?
