“A Day in the Life” with: Visual Artist Barb DeRousie

The days get away with laughter and conversations of art until…

Days dismissed with vibrant colours, ebbing skies turning pink, and the horizon gathering wispy clouds that simmer into night. Art, within its capacity to evoke, involve and capture people’s attention, is a constant conversation—it’s just the chats around the Barb DeRousie household—artist, friend and companion. A wonderfully talented artist, Barb’s coveted works have adorned galleries and the walls of many cozy homes.

Reflective of her early life, growing up on lighthouses along the coasts of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, she creates everything from epic canvases to tiny abstract earrings, all with the joy of her unique style.

And yes, the days are filled with laughter and art talk until… “Hey, we should really get dinner”. Art is always there, but life is her “media” (as much as the day gets away).

It All Started with Watercolour…This watercolour commission, which I painted back in 2015, is still available as a limited edition fine art print. Prints and cards of this iconic Victoria location are still for sale at the Four Winds Gift Shop, Fisherman’s Wharf, Victoria, BC.

In my studio by the sea with my constant companion, I’m sorry to say that she passed away recently after 11 wonderful years.

Workshops…I had a blast leading workshops on creating collage papers using a Geli plate at the Gage Gallery Second Story in Victoria, BC. I use my handmade collage in my paintings and to make designs for my Wearable Art Earrings. If you’re interested in this, I’d be happy to organize a workshop in Calgary!
Wearable Art Earrings…These earrings are made from original mixed media designs mounted on heavy watercolour paper, sealed for moisture resistance, and embellished with semi-precious or glass beads.

Which ’hood are you in?

When I moved to Southeast Calgary to start a new chapter with my partner, I brought a little bit of Victoria, BC, with me. We absolutely love Copperfield because everything we need is right there, and when the weather warms up, we’ll be excited to check out all the parks, bike paths and waterways.

What do you do?

As a mixed media artist, I enjoy creating all sorts of things, from big paintings to Wearable Art Earrings. I also love to teach workshops about how to make collage papers using a Geli plate. In Victoria, I had a pretty good art career, with me being part of an art collective/gallery, having several art memberships and showing and selling my work regularly, including two annual solo shows.

What are you currently working on?

Currently, I am working on new pieces and expanding my inventory of earrings. I always have a project underway in the studio, and I am currently taking an online art course that involves experimenting with acrylic paint and handmade collage papers.

Where can we find your work?

I recently made my debut in Calgary at the Calgary Artists Studio Tour. The event featured some of my larger originals, prints, cards and, of course, my popular Wearable Art Earrings. For more information, you can go to my website or check out my Instagram.
