“A Day in the Life” with: Visual Artist Cynthia Pasloski

In 2010, Cynthia Pasloski graduated with distinction, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in painting from the Alberta University of the Arts. This achievement marked the culmination of a transformative artistic journey that began in her childhood, where she discovered a love for creating through the simple act of sketching with pencils, laying the foundation for what would become a transformative artistic career.

Cynthia’s trajectory in the arts took a significant turn when she relocated from Saskatchewan to Calgary in 1992. Inspired and encouraged by myself, her husband, she enrolled in an evening course at the Alberta University of the Arts. Her talent quickly became evident, and after completing several evening courses, an instructor recognized her potential and motivated her to apply for the BFA program. Embracing this pivotal advice, Cynthia embarked on a path that would refine her artistic skills and define her career as a Calgary-based visual artist.

Cynthia’s art radiates her lively and dynamic spirit, serving as a vivid narrative canvas for her unique storytelling. Each piece showcases bold colours and stylized forms, not just to create visual appeal but to weave intricate tales that resonate with viewers. Her work infuses spaces with vibrant energy, drawing the outside world inward and transforming it into compelling stories that reflect her distinctive perspective. Through her creations, Cynthia invites audiences to embark on a journey within her art—discovering layers of meaning, emotion, and storytelling embedded in every brushstroke.

My work displayed at the Calgary Sketch and Painting Club Art Show, which is held twice a year.
A piece from my Red Canoe Series titled “Just Keep Paddling” has been permanently installed in its forever home.
So, I had the chance to visit San Francisco and stumbled upon this incredible place called The Albany Bulb. It’s like a hidden gem, a former construction debris landfill on San Francisco Bay where folks have been creating these amazing outdoor sculptures and paintings for years. It’s a beautiful spot to explore and get inspired.
A piece from my Hiraeth Series, titled “An Early Morning Walk”. The expansive scale of this painting truly resonated with me, evoking a sense that I could step right into the artwork and embark on an exploration of its serene landscape.
My work displayed at Vales Cultivation of Art Show and Sale, held yearly in June.

Which ‘hood are you in?

Nestled in Northwest Calgary, my husband and I are fortunate to call this beautiful area home. Right beyond our doorstep lies Bowmont Park, a sprawling haven with an intricate web of walking trails perfect for exploration. The park’s vibrant hues and shifting light play a profound role in shaping my artistic vision. Each stroll with our beloved Labrador, Clyde, reveals new palettes and textures—rustling golden leaves in the fall, the crisp blues of winter shadows, and the fresh greens of spring—that breathe life into my paintings, transforming simple walks into boundless creative inspiration.

What do you do?

As a visual artist, certified dental assistant, and master gardener, I navigate a unique blend of disciplines that shape my perception and artistic expression. With over four decades of experience as a certified dental assistant in Saskatchewan and Alberta, I have developed a meticulous approach that is rooted in structured and systematic practices. This professional discipline contrasts beautifully with my passion for painting, which offers an avenue for escapism and creative exploration.

My artistic journey is primarily expressed through oil paints, though I occasionally integrate mixed media to enhance certain series. Rather than being confined to a single subject, my inspiration flows from diverse sources—landscapes, abstractions, and florals alike. My aim is to capture a mood, the essence of light, and a profound sense of place. Through my work, I invite viewers into a space where they can revisit, reflect, and experience an ever-present sense of boundless possibility.

I find immense joy in creating large-scale pieces. Each time I work on one, I feel as though I could immerse myself within it, embarking on an endless journey through the artwork itself. This process gives me the sense that I’m crafting something greater than myself—not in a literal sense, but in the profound impact and experience it may evoke in those who engage with my work.

What are you currently working on?

In my current series, “Red Canoes,” I explore more than just the vibrant hue of the canoes themselves. While red holds a special significance for me beyond being a favourite colour, it serves a deliberate purpose within each composition. My real focus lies in the dynamic relationship between the canoes and their surrounding environments. I am captivated by how light, gravity, and water interact, breathing life and movement into the scenes. The process of creating these paintings not only excites me but also sparks anticipation for future works, guiding my inspiration and shaping the direction of upcoming series.
