Charitable Choices: Cindy Ngo of The Calgary Drop-In Centre

The Calgary Drop-In Centre is redefining how communities respond to homelessness through a housing-first, trauma-informed approach that extends beyond emergency shelter to include health care, recovery, and long-term housing solutions. Open 24/7, the DI supports vulnerable Calgarians with dignity and compassion while creating pathways toward stability and hope. We spoke with Cindy Ngo, Manager and Fund Development of The Calgary Drop-In Centre, to learn more about their work and impact.

The Calgary Drop-In Centre

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

The Calgary Drop-In Centre (DI) is transforming homelessness support with a housing-first, trauma-informed approach that goes beyond emergency shelter to include health, recovery, and essential resources. Open 24/7, the DI operates three affordable housing buildings and a Donation Centre that turns community generosity into real impact for vulnerable Calgarians. With dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners, the DI is creating pathways to hope, dignity, and a better future for those most in need.

What problem does it aim to solve?

Our mission is to end homelessness by helping one person at a time.

When did you start/join it?

I first joined the DI in 2016, where I was a summer student leading the employment services training program. I left in 2019 and returned in 2021, and have been here since.

What made you want to get involved?

The DI’s mission immediately captured my heart. Understanding that homelessness can impact anyone made me realize that I want to support the mission and helping to build a community where everyone has a place to call home.

What was the situation like when you started?

When I first started, the DI was just shifting to housing-first. The change has been significant. We were able to help hundreds of Calgarians find homes.

How has it changed since?

Amid the challenges of rising housing costs and the opioid crisis, the need for compassionate support has never been greater. At the DI, we work tirelessly every day to help people move from uncertainty to stability and find a place they can truly call home. While many face financial struggles and complex health challenges, we believe in their resilience and are committed to creating pathways toward healing, dignity, and hope.

What more needs to be done?

The truth is simple: we need more affordable and deeply affordable housing solutions. While this will not happen overnight, every small step we take as a community brings us closer to that goal. Your support matters. Through donations, advocacy, and action, we can sustain programs that help people find safe, stable homes and build a future filled with hope.

How can our readers help?

There are several impactful ways people can help beyond just awareness:

  • Donate:

– Financial contributions: Even small monthly donations help sustain housing programs and recovery services.
– Essential items: Clothing, hygiene products, and household goods for the Donation Centre.

  • Volunteer:

– Offer time at shelters, meal programs, or the Donation Centre.

  • Advocate:

– Speak up about affordable housing and mental health supports.
– Use social media to amplify the message and reduce stigma around homelessness.

  • Partner:

– Businesses can sponsor programs or provide employment opportunities.
– Community groups can organize drives or fundraising events.

  • Educate:

– Learn about trauma-informed care and the root causes of homelessness.
– Encourage conversations that foster empathy and understanding.

Do you have any events coming up?

While we do not have any events happening right now, we are excited to invite sponsors for our upcoming annual Orange Brunch. This signature celebration honours the incredible impact of volunteers and community champions who make our work possible. Partnering with us as a sponsor means joining a movement of hope and recognition while showcasing your commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate Calgary. Orange Brunch takes place in Spring 2026!
