“A Day in the Life” with: Calgary Photographer Mitch Kern

Mitch Kern creates photography that explores the complex relationship between identity, perception, and the natural world. He blends fine art, documentary, and editorial styles to create images that are both visually striking and conceptually layered.

His series Wild Suburb exemplifies this approach, presenting surreal self-portraits wearing an animal mask in everyday settings. The images challenge viewers to question the boundaries between species, the roles we play in society, and the constructed nature of identity.

His work draws from the landscapes and cultural tensions of southern Alberta, using them as a backdrop to explore themes of coexistence and ownership of land.

His photographs are not just records of moments but carefully constructed narratives that reflect his interest in how culture and identity shape what we see—and what we want to see.

His work invites viewers into a dialogue about representation, authenticity, and the power of images to both reflect and distort reality. In so doing, he positions the camera not only as a tool for observation, but also as a participant in shaping the world it captures.
