For this week’s local business feature, we had the chance to speak with Gordon Johansen, the owner of The Sentry Box, Canada’s largest game store. Since its inception 45 years ago, The Sentry Box has become a landmark for game enthusiasts, offering a vast selection of speciality wargames and role-playing games. What started as a quest to obtain cheap games for himself and his friends has grown into a thriving business that caters to all age groups and genders. We spoke with Gordon about his journey, the unique challenges and rewards of running such a specialized store, and his thoughts on the industry.

What is your business called and what does it do?

The Sentry Box – we are Canada’s largest game store.

What made you want to do this work?

When I started out, 45 years ago, I was looking for a way to get cheap games for myself and friends.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

The limited selection of specialty wargames and role-playing games in Calgary.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

It depends on the department but we cater to all age groups and genders.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

We are a retail store.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

I enjoy these kinds of games, do you have one similar to them or can you recommend something? There is no specific answer as it will depend on the type of games they mention.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

After 45 years, I still love what I do and have an awesome staff. The worst would be dealing with government paperwork.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

You can never have too many dice.
