Five Minutes With: Indie Band Flowshine

The band Flowshine has spent over a decade carving a path a little left of centre. Their love of adventure, experience, and bringing people together with music has taken them from their home in Calgary to oft overlooked corners of the country. Their openness to experimentation and desire to make something wondrous has led them to moulding a distinct brand of indie/alternative music with big harmonies and sing-along hooks. Their songs demonstrate strong musicianship, relatable storytelling, and often feature musical guests lending their signature to the Flowshine whole. The band has said, “We want our music to be fun and emotive; we want people to jump in our canoe and let us guide them down the river, showing them things they’ve never experienced.”

Still Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley lol

Guilty pleasure song:

I don’t know if we feel guilty, but we have tickets to Goo Goo Dolls in March. We saw them in 2002 and they were awesome.

Live show ritual:

High fives and a pep talk, pretty standard. Grab a stage drink, explain to one of the patrons that we may or may not play their Bob Seger request.

Favourite local musician:

Octoduck, Lushings, Free the Cynics — so many great bands in Calgary, go to a show!

EP or LP?

We love a sprawling concept record or a punchy 20-minute collection bangers. Either if they’re done well!

Early bird or night owl?

Night owls, but all our day jobs are for early birds. For all morning people who want meetings at the crack of dawn, let’s start trying some midnight starts and see if you’re still firing on all cylinders haha.

Road or studio?

There are magic moments in both. The studio allows us to fuss and focus on the document, but the road allows us to connect with people and experience something in real time.

About Jocelyne Sobie 1 Article
Jocelyne loves street art photography, traveling, discovering different cultures, and trying foods she can barely pronounce. Spirituality and giving back matter deeply to her, leading her to volunteer both locally and abroad, experiences she will never forget. She’s drawn to books and documentaries that explore how society works and how people think, especially real-life stories that don’t always make the headlines. That curiosity led her to this work, where she creates space for creative, hardworking people to share their stories and inspire others.
