“A Day in the Life” with Calgary Creative Selina Wong

Selina Wong is a motivated young woman who has achieved a high degree of excellence in everything she attempts.  Born and raised here, she graduated the University of Calgary with a combined degree in Education and Canadian Studies, followed by five years of teaching grades one, two and three for the CBE.  She is an educator of the highest quality and has an ARCT in Voice and her Grade Eight Royal Conservatory in Piano.  Selina has spent many years as a private voice teacher, an adjudicator for different venues and a sessional instructor at Rocky Mountain College. Her students have been extremely successful both in the Calgary Performing Arts Hey Festival and as young vocalists for theatrical companies.

Her singing career has been highly touted.  She won the Stampede Talent Search in 2001 and went on to be the runner up in the National Talent Search. In the same year she was chosen for the Young Albertan Award.

Since 2012, Selina has become an accomplished actor as well. Her first professional show was Jeremy de Bergerac for The Forte Musical Theatre Guild in which she played a teenager with an unrequited crush and from there has appeared at Stage West in Avenue Q (which she was nominated for a Betty Mitchell Award) and as Maria Elena in The Buddy Holly Story at The Globe Theatre in Regina, to mention only a few.

But her latest accomplishment with her husband Nicolas is their beautiful son Matteo, who at twenty-one months is a go-getter.

Calgarians can look forward to being entertained for years to come by this very talented and engaging artist!!

What hood are you in?

I live in Panorama NW. We have been here for 9 years and I love how close it is to our families and so many different amenities!

What do you do?

I am a devoted mom with a busy 21 month old son and an actor, singer and voice teacher. I love having the flexibility of teaching from my home studio as it allows me to take care of Matteo during the day while having the ability to flex my creative muscle through professional work when a show comes along.

What are you currently working on?

I am just about to start rehearsals for Naughty… But Nice: Six in the City! with Forte Musical Theatre Guild. I am thrilled to be back in this show for the third time with this amazingly talented group of artists I get to call friends. I am also finishing this teaching semester at my voice studio with a winter recital!

Naughty… But Nice will be playing at Lunchbox Theatre from December 5th -22nd. Come and enjoy a holiday musical, that’s become a new Calgary tradition, for grown-ups!
