Morning Coyote is a Canadian alternative rock project based in Edmonton, Alberta, founded by singer-songwriter Sawyer Begg. In studio, Begg writes, records, and produces the music. As a performing act, Morning Coyote enlists a rotating roster of musicians, trained in jazz and improvisation, to reimagine the compositions for a live context so that each performance becomes unique. These articulations vary— sometimes loud, shoegazey rock, sometimes intimate, acoustic folk-jazz, depending on the demands of the particular performance and venue.
The group released their debut EP (recorded in Begg’s bedroom) in 2025 before headlining Edmonton’s Starlight Room in support of their most recent single and music video, “Ozymandias.” Since then, Morning Coyote has produced a trilogy of live concert films and has begun 2026 with the recording of their first studio EP, featuring the awaited track “Lattice Climbing” and slated for release in June. Fresh off a UK and European tour, Morning Coyote is now set to tour Canada to promote the EP, concluding with a performance at Toronto’s NXNE Festival in June.

EP or LP?
I grew up very heavily an LP person. I remember adoring the tracklisting of Coldplay’s Ghost Stories and using it as a template for albums I’d write as a kid.
Early bird or night owl?
I’d like to be an early morning person, but I think I naturally default to staying up late. I feel like 4-5 am is the last sacred hour in my life that still feels magic like when I was a kid, and one day I’ll wake up for it.
Road or studio?
Road absolutely. When I began recording in junior and high school, I felt very much the opposite and loved producing and working in the box with no intention of ever playing live. But performing these past two years has taught me that we’ll always be at our most authentic and visceral in person. It’s actually been difficult to now reacclimate to the studio to record our upcoming EP; We’ve played them differently so many times, how do we now go about creating one definitive “studio” version of these songs?
I can’t speak much for the road specifically yet, I’ve only just returned from my first tour, solo in the UK and Europe, but I adored it, and my priority for the future is to play outside of Edmonton consistently. This summer we’re performing at NXNE in Toronto, trying to independently scrape together our first Canadian tour on the way out, and are looking forward to stopping in Calgary for our first date in early June.
Any shows or albums coming up?
We’re releasing our first EP in over a year this summer.
It’s been the most collaborative Morning Coyote project so far. Our debut project was mostly myself recording everything at home, and it’s been beautiful working in studio with my friends, and to have so many other hands and ears on this project. Some of it was even recorded in London on tour and has contributions from friends I met there.
We’ll be rolling out songs, leading up to our Canadian tour and full release at the start of June.
Where can we follow you?

Rapid Fire Local Questions:
What is your favourite local restaurant?
Steel Wheels!!!!!! I am certain when they make a documentary about the Edmonton music scene in 20 years, Steel Wheels will be the epicentre of it.
What is your favourite street in your city and why?
109th Street, on the south side of the river. Specifically for the Metro Cinema, Remedy Cafe, High Level Diner, and all the good, locally owned things to do there.
What is your favourite park in your city and why?
The Whitemud Ravine, especially the MacTaggart bird sanctuary. I think it’s pretty unique to have that kind of wilderness in the middle of a city, and the more I travel, the more it means to me.
What is your favourite music venue in your city?
I cherish both the Aviary and the Starlite Room equally. Morning Coyote wouldn’t be anything without them, and they’re so foundational to music in Edmonton, giving musicians and bands opportunities to perform.
What is your favourite music store in your city?
Record Collector’s Paradise!!! To my knowledge, they no longer have a Laura Nyro tab because I bought them all.
