Charitable Choices: Leah Ison of CP Alberta

CP Alberta is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities across Alberta by providing adapted and therapeutic programs, advocacy, and essential resources. Their mission is to create a more accessible and inclusive society where everyone can participate fully and equally.

We spoke with Leah Ison, Communications & Engagement Specialist at CP Alberta, to discuss her role in amplifying the voices of the disability community and how the organization continues to expand its services and advocacy efforts throughout the province.

CP Alberta

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

CP Alberta is a non-profit dedicated to supporting individuals with all disabilities. Our mission is to create a more accessible and inclusive Alberta by providing essential adapted and therapeutic programs, advocacy initiatives, and resources for people with disabilities and their families. We also have the CP Cares Program that assists Albertans with disabilities to achieve a better quality of life by providing monetary support for technology, adapted equipment, camps, therapies or items most needed, such as food vouchers or basic essential care and hygiene items for children and adults.

What problem does it aim to solve?

The biggest challenge we aim to solve is breaking down barriers to inclusion, whether they are physical, social, or systemic. Many people with disabilities face challenges in accessing recreation and even basic services, and we work to change that.

When did you start/join it?

I joined CP Alberta in 2013 and have never looked back.

What made you want to get involved?

I wanted to use my skills in communications to make a real influence. Non-profit work is something I’ve always been passionate about, and I saw an opportunity to help amplify the voices of the disability community.

What was the situation like when you started?

When I first started, awareness about accessibility issues wasn’t as strong, and advocacy efforts were scattered. There were still many gaps when it came to inclusive recreation, and affordable programs for kids and adults with disabilities in Alberta.

How has it changed since?

Since then, we’ve made significant progress—launching new therapeutic programs like ‘Splash Time Aqua Therapy,’ expanding fundraising initiatives with our annual Golf Without Limits tournaments and collaborating with disability champions, other organizations, and Government officials to push for accessibility legislation.

What more needs to be done?

There’s still a lot of work to do, especially in areas like accessibility for all, and although we have expanded our programs to Northern Alberta, and soon to launch in Red Deer, we strive to reach all corners of the province.

How can our readers help?

Readers can help by supporting our initiatives—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply sharing our message. Spreading awareness about accessibility issues and championing for inclusive policies makes a huge difference. The 7th Annual Golf Without Limits tournament takes place at Blue Devil Golf Club on June 16th, Superhero StRoll Calgary – Saturday, September 6, HUSH Gala – Saturday, October 18, Poker at Cash Casino in September.
