Located in Calgary, Bow City Storage offers a variety of services to facilitate better storage solutions for businesses and Calgarians. They offer units and sizes ranging from 25 sq ft to 450 sq ft for personal/residential use, business use, student use, or even parking. They also offer truck rental for easy and convenient trips, as well as packing supplies, four indoor loading bays and oversized high-speed elevators for easier unloading. We spoke with Siea Newton, General Manager of Bow City Storage to learn more about them.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Our business is called Bow City Storage and we provide self-storage solutions to Calgary Residents and Small Businesses
What made you want to do this work?
Wanting to run a storage facility might sound crazy, but the reason I love doing it is the amazing team I am surrounded by daily – I love helping people. We are able to solve a space problem for people by providing secure, clean and convenient accessible storage units in Calgary.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I kind of mentioned it in the previous question. Our facility helps people with space when they need it. Some of our customers need space for a small amount of time while they are in between homes, and others need it indefinitely because their home simply doesn’t have enough storage space. Also, we serve the local small business community by offering small warehouse space to them that is accessible to them 24 hrs a day. Many small businesses are run outside of the 9-5 daytime hours, so having a warehouse that is accessible after hours, has helped many local businesses.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Our clientele is really quite diverse. I can’t say there is one demographic that uses our business more. From Students to Seniors, to Small business owners – anyone who needs some extra space is our client. Whether it is storing student furniture during the summer, or storing items during a downsize, we see it all. Our facility has a really diverse set of storage unit sizes, so we can accommodate everyone!
How does your business make money? How does it work?
The self-storage units are rented on a monthly basis to our customers for a fee. We include everything except for the insurance and taxes n that fee. Each customer can access their own unit when needed. The unit is auto-renewed as long as the customer needs it. We don’t believe in locking people into a storage unit long term – we work on a month-to-month auto-renew model.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
“Can I come in for a tour?” The reason I picked this question is that we are very transparent with our pricing and features on our website (for that you don’t need to come in and see us). So, when making a decision of where to store your valuables, I love it when people ask – who are you?? Would you leave your valuables somewhere that you didn’t know or trust? We are a professionally managed facility and we always want to make sure the customer is satisfied when taking a unit with us.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is the people – the people I work with and the customers I help solve the space problem for. The worst parts are so infrequent, that it is insignificant. We have the best customers and we really are enjoying hearing their stories.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Sometimes people joke/think that a storage facility just runs itself…not true. Our team has created such a wonderful environment for our customers to come into daily, that it is our team that really runs the facility.
