“A Day in the Life” with: Writer Lynda Williams

My wife, Lynda Williams, is a fiction writer who likes to cope with the occasional bout of writer’s block by taking naps at random times during the day so she can “dream herself closer to the words.” She grew up on a farm and cusses like they kept her in the barn with the cows. She has the sense of humour of a twelve-year-old boy. Patience is not her virtue. Ice cream is her love language. She lives with a mood disorder and describes herself as the CEO of it. She’s not a swell housekeeper, but she makes a good air-fryer meatloaf and a mean banana bread–she kept that secret hidden for the first twelve years of our marriage! She recently implemented something called The Bedside Banana Program, which involves her delivering coffee and food to me in bed, so I can scroll through the news and wake up slowly (can you tell we don’t have children?). Being married to a writer has its perks, but the level of rejection she faces is wild. If anything else made her as happy, I’d want her to do it instead.

What do you do?

I write fiction and freelance copyedit (the first part is what excites me). My collection, The Beauty and the Hell of It & Other Stories, came out last fall.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on a novel based on a short story I wrote shortly after my book launch. It’s a love story for cynics, and it has reinvigorated my passion for writing. It feels good to be at the beginning of something, the moment when it’s all new, and everything is possible–I’m totally in the honeymoon phase of this project. Novel writing is a different beast from short stories; I’ve always been intimidated by the long haul involved, but I’m taking one section at a time and enjoying the ride.

Where can we find your work?
