Laurie Lynn Muirhead’s abiding love and curiosity for the natural world and the people in her life has inspired her to write both poetry and children’s literature. From the time she was able to put pen to paper, she has been creating songs, stories, and poems—performing them to anyone or any critter that would listen, including the frogs in the marsh and her father’s herd of Hereford cows.
Reflecting on her personal experiences during her life’s journey, Laurie has authored a number of books both traditionally and through non-traditional avenues. She is passionate about her work and shares her keen insight and writing knowledge with children of all ages, inspiring many not only to read but also to write. She is a member of the local Poetry Group and a Creative Writing Coach for youth.
Of course, when she is not writing, you can find her in her garden picking fruit, vegetables, or weeds, fencing the grasslands, or wrangling grandchildren and livestock. You most definitely won’t find her cleaning house or doing laundry!
Laurie lives with her family amidst the stunning Boreal Forest, where, besides her writing addiction, she works as an elementary school librarian and family ranch hand in Wild Rose.

Where do you live?
I live 25 km northwest of Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, on a ranch in the heart of a rural community known as Wild Rose.
What do you do?
First and foremost, I am a wife, mother, and grandmother who loves to ranch, write, and garden. I enjoy performing at themed poetry readings and workshops and cherish a steeped cup of tea between a few words and a good friend. There are no idle days in my life, for a wise poet once told me: “You have to live to write, embrace each adventure, good, bad, or otherwise.”
Also known as Mrs. Muirhead, the librarian, I love to share stories, old and new, with students of all ages.
What are you currently working on?
I am working on another collection of poetry infused with memories of growing up with four sisters and five brothers on a small mixed farm in the seventies. I am also editing a children’s picture book about “snail mail” and the unlikely promise of a pen pal.
Where can we find your work?
You can find my books on Amazon.ca, Indigo-Chapters, 49thShelf.com, Google Books, Prairie Books, etc.
And a whole lot of them in my closet, just waiting for a new home!
My Books:
- Bone Sense (Poetry Collection)
- Lullaby Lilly (Children’s Picture Book)
- Bulls for Breakfast (Chapbook)
- Coyote Snow (Poetry Collection, debuting November 2025)
This most recent collection focuses on the idea that there are only two seasons for those living the land: winter, and getting ready for winter.
