In a city where community impact is often driven by a handful of deeply committed volunteers, long-standing organizations quietly carry the weight of consistency. For decades, the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Chinook has been one of those steady forces—small in numbers, but outsized in reach—supporting youth development through recognition, leadership programs, and hands-on mentorship.
Now, as membership challenges grow and demand for youth programming continues to rise, the club is doubling down on what it does best: investing in the next generation. At the center of that effort is Darlene Kerr, Club Secretary and Bike Program Coordinator, who has been part of Kiwanis since 1988. In this interview, she speaks to the evolution of the club, the importance of nurturing young leaders, and why community involvement matters now more than ever—especially as they prepare for an upcoming Earth Day fundraiser aimed at expanding their impact across Calgary.

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
The Kiwanis Club of Calgary Chinook has been supporting local charities through volunteering and club projects for the last 75 years. The event we are contacting you about supports our Youth Recognition and Leadership programs.
What problem does it aim to solve?
Raising awareness of our Youth Recognition and Leadership programs in Calgary and raising funds for these programs.
When did you start/join it?
I joined Kiwanis in 1988. Our Youth Recognition Program has been running for over 40 years. It recognizes a student of the month in 4 Junior High Schools. Our Youth Leadership Program (Key Club) has been running for 10 years at the Robert Thirsk High School.
What made you want to get involved?
Getting involved with like-minded individuals to help our community in a variety of ways.
What was the situation like when you started?
Our Kiwanis Club has always been small but very active in the community.
How has it changed since?
Our club continues to be very active, but membership is falling, and it is harder to maintain the programs that we are committed to.

What more needs to be done?
More members are needed to join and fill in leadership roles within the club. We would like to extend our Youth Recognition and Leadership program to more schools.
How can our readers help?
Join our club. Get involved in our programs. Attend our upcoming fundraiser.
