Megan’s Rescue Efforts Society is a Calgary-based, foster-focused non-profit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned, abused, and neglected animals. Founded by Megan Steele and supported by a passionate team of volunteers, the organization provides rescued animals with essential medical care, spay/neutering, vaccinations, and socialization to prepare them for carefully screened adoptive homes. Committed to the well-being of every animal they save, the society never euthanizes for space or non-health-related issues, ensuring all animals receive the time and care they need to find loving forever homes. Through community support, donations, and events, Megan’s Rescue Efforts Society continues its mission to transform the lives of animals in need. We had the chance to speak with Megan Steele to gain further insight.
Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
We are a foster-based dog and cat rescue in Calgary Alberta
What problem does it aim to solve?
We are working on helping reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs in our province and lower the amount of homeless cats and dogs.
When did you start/join the charity?
I created the rescue in the fall of 2014
What made you want to get involved?
I started volunteering with a few rescues as a dog foster and saw the huge need there was for fosters in our area
What was the situation like when you started?
We work a lot with the surrounding First Nations Communities and it was very hard when I started to have them see the importance of spaying, neutering and vaccinating their dogs and cats. This really was not helping out the overpopulation of cats and dogs.
How has it changed since?
Over the last few years, we have seen a real switch where community members are reaching out to us as they get new pets asking for support to get the vetting done.
What more needs to be done?
We are seeing more families not able to financially take care of their pets which is putting a huge strain on the rescue world. We need more support to run low-cost vet programs, along with more households opening their homes up as foster homes
How can our readers help?
If they are able to donate with monetary donations that is always a huge help. For anyone not in a position to donate that way, can be a huge help by Liking and Sharing posts on social media to help get the word out to others about who needs a home and what events and fundraisers we have coming up.
Do you have any events coming up?
Along with our January Dog Wash events and Adoption events, we are holding a Microchip Clinic for Dogs in Calgary
