Urban Thrift is a Calgary-based Consignment boutique that provides excellent quality second-hand and accessories for men and women. At Urban Thrift, you’re bound to find something truly unique special while also doing something positive for the environment and local charities. We spoke with the owner of Urban Thrift, Domenic Stante to learn more about them.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Urban Thrift We accept designer, vintage, retro, streetwear and everyday contemporary fashion items on consignment and resell them to the public. We also offer gift items and fashion accessories from Calgary-based companies and makers.
What made you want to do this work?
I wanted a change from the corporate environment and wanted to do something sustainable and rewarding that gives back to the community.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
We provide customers with quality fashion items as an alternative to shopping fast fashion. The fashion industry is the second worst polluter worldwide next to Oil & Gas.
We provide our consignors with a way to recycle their much-loved but seldom-used fashion items in an environmentally sustainable way. They can feel good about what they’re doing and make a little extra money.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Enviro-conscious consumers who want to make a difference with their dollar spend.
The fashion resale industry is booming across all demographics with the fastest-growing segment being men.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
Those who consign items are offered a percentage of the final sale amount. Consignors are encouraged to shop in-store with their credit and promote the store to help us sell their items.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
What makes you different from other Consignment shops?
– Our shop is unique in the way we present and curate fashion offerings
– We offer offerings for both Men & Women
– We are also unique in how we manage our consignor accounts
– We contribute to local charities and provide our consignors with the same opportunity
– Our primary charity partner is CAWST (The Center for Affordable Water & Sanitation Technologies)
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Best: Dealing with our customers, consignors and contributing to the community and helping the environment. Worst: Nothing, I love what I do
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
There are two problems that all women seem to share I never have anything to wear and I don’t have enough room for all my clothes.
