We had the chance to catch up with the SunnyCider team to know a little more about how they make delicious cider with local fruits and produce.
What is your business called and what does it do?
SunnyCider – We make local, small-batch cider with local and Okanagon fruit.
What made you want to do this work?
This is the story of a group of neighbours in Sunnyside Calgary getting together every fall and pressing backyard apples and making cider. The cider was really good and we thought there was a business model here.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Decreasing fruit waste. There are 10000s of fruit trees in Calgary and most people can’t handle the volume of fruit they produce. We want to make a product that is delicious from this potential compost waste. We are also striving for Net Zero emissions.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
We appeal to a lot of folks but primarily we seem to be focused on middle-aged women.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
Selling cider to retail stores, restaurants and also through our own taproom in the NE of Calgary
Where in Calgary can we find your profession?
1-3300 14th Avenue NE (Also available at all Coops in Calgary)
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
Do you like dry ciders? Do you think ciders are too sweet? If you answered yes to either of these, try ours!
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Best part – Being part of many communities. I love meeting new people and working with other people.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
I’m so Excidered!
PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
