The snow is gone (or almost)! It is our chance to go outside again without piling on the layers thanks to the weather getting warmer. As you walk along the street, you look up to see blue skies with a few fluffy clouds. But that is not all you notice. The birds are coming back, trees and bushes have some buds appearing on them, and the green grass is just starting to show itself. So now that the snow is melting, what can we do this April? Here is our list:
Journey to the 80s
When: March 30 – June 1
Where: Jubilations Dinner Theatre
There is no quirkier decade than the 80’s. For a whole month, we get to live out that wild and crazy era at one of our favourite live-dinner theatres. See the outrageous hair and colourful clothing, while singing to all of your favourite songs. Featuring all the best songs from the 80s, you can hear from divas like Madonna and Tina Turner or rock gods like Bon Jovi and Journey. No need to bring your shoulder pads because they have plenty. Just bring your appetite.
Selma Burke
When: April 2-27
Where: Martha Cohen Theatre (Arts Commons)
Theatre Calgary is bringing the remarkable story of a woman who created the image for the USA’s dime. Selma Burke is an African-American sculptor and a member of the Harlem Renaissance Movement. Although she never received recognition for her work in her life, she is the woman who made a difference in so many people’s lives and they didn’t even know it. This is an inspiring play about art, love, bravery, and the fight for justice.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
When: April 6
Where: Scotiabank Saddledome
The rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton continues as they take it to the ice. For one night only, you can watch these two hockey teams go toe to toe (or in this case; skate to skate). It is always a thrill to see a hockey game live especially when it comes to watching the two biggest Alberta metropolitans go against each other. It does not matter whether you are a Flames fan or have an oiler obsession, just have your cheers ready.
National Women’s Show
When: April 13-14
Where: Stampede Park
Looking for fashion, food, and fun? There is no better event to find it at than at the Women’s Show in Stampede Park. Arrive early enough you get a goodie bag and they always have the best stuff. This year’s entertainment includes the male dancers of Klub Kave, clairvoyant medium Kim Dennis, and a musical performance from Jubilations. Don’t forget to take it easy at the Sip n’ Sample Lounge, get a free makeover, or even find that perfect treasure from a local vendor. This makes for a good weekend.
Telus Spark After Dark: STEAMpunk
When: April 13
Where: Telus Spark
Art, science, and imagination are being brought to life for this amazing night. This evening promises specially-themed cocktails and bites, music by SoniDef to dance the night away, and the ability to learn some steampunk alchemy. That is just for starters, you can explore the Emporium Market with Cirque De La Nuit artists, use your problem-solving skills in a couple of escape rooms, and so much more. Get your goggles, clockwork accessories, and Victorian fashion ready because there is a contest for the best dressed.
The Spring Market
When: April 14
Where: Deerfoot Inn and Casino
Got an afternoon free? Time to spring into action with this market that will help you get into the season’s spirit. Over 80 vendors will be there to showcase their treasures in the Hallway, Sundance & Bridlewood ballrooms. This is a free admission and parking event where you will find many foods, fashions, arts and crafts, with many more. A good way to rest after all that spring cleaning.
The Calgary Underground Film Festival
When: April 18-28
Where: Globe Cinema
Film fans rejoice! We have got ten beautiful days of international independent films to watch at the Globe Cinema. This festival features genres of all kinds from horror, comedies, sci-fi, fantasy, and sometimes even musicals. If you are looking to expand your mind and take in a little culture, then you want to get a ticket to one or more of these original films.
Jurassic Quest
When: April 19-21
Where: BMO Centre
If you or someone in your circle is a dinosaur fan then you will want to check out this prehistoric adventure. This is the largest and most lifelike dinosaur-themed event on the continent. That’s right! They go all over North America. See some adorable baby dinosaurs, uncover some fossils, and ride on one of these reptile behemoths. This event is family-friendly, so be sure to bring the little ones with you.
Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo
When: April 25-28
Where: Stampede Park
Calgary’s love for pop culture of all kinds is going to be shown off in one place. For four days we get to meet celebrities from our favourite shows, get our game on when it comes to video games, dress up in our cosplay costumes, and even get a sneak-peak of our favourite comics. This is happening may only be for a weekend but it is so popular that tickets tend to fly off the shelves.
