What to do in Calgary this March, 2024

When the green comes out and the snow is still about, it means that the month of March is here. Soon there will be no snow at all and it will be all green. And not just because of the leprechauns present on Saint Patrick’s Day but the way the green grass keeps popping up due to the changing of the seasons. The one thing that doesn’t change is the fact that Calgary knows how to have some fun. With these exciting events just around the corner, we have a lot to look forward to. Here is what we got:

The Da Vinci Exhibition

When: January 22 to May 5
Where: Telus Spark Science Centre

Telus Spark commemorates one of the best Renaissance men in all of history. They have been doing this for two months so far and we have got two more months to enjoy this exhibit. If you ever wanted to know what went on in this great polymath’s life this is the place to explore his many works, inventions, and artistry. You can also find out how he helped shape our lives in modern society with his work in both nature and technology. We have a lot to thank him for.

SPACE: A Journey to the Moon and Beyond

When: Feb 10 to May 5
Where: Telus Spark Science Centre

Have you ever wanted to immerse yourself in the stars and get a closer look at all of the planets in our solar system? Now you can do that. Telus Spark is partnering up with Illuminarium Experiences to give us a colourful and vibrant look into outer space. You can get a close-up of your favourite constellation, check out the nebulas, and see what most would need a telescope to see. Don’t wait until the last minute. Space won’t be here too long.

Winefest

When: March 1 and 2
Where: BMO Centre

A perfect way to start the month for any oenophile in the city. Hundreds of wines of every kind are being brought into one location here in Calgary. But that is not all to look forward to with this event. These wines come with both sweet and savoury nibbles that will make your mouth water. You will get to know what wine goes with what food and perhaps get a little event inspiration of your own. What is not to love about this?

Calgary Flames Home Games

When: March 2, 4, 12, 14, 16, 18, 24 and 30
Where: Scotiabank Saddledome

What every hardcore hockey fan looks forward to. When the Calgary Flames play in our Saddledome the city comes alive in a contagious way. Even if you can not go to the game live, the pubs and restaurants will always have the game on. For those who can’t get to the Saddledome itself but still want to get in on the action, there are all kinds of options. Whichever route you decide to go on to enjoy the game, you will have a blast seeing our Flames score that goal.

Alberta Ballet: Hansel & Gretel

When: March 7 to 9
Where: Southern Jubilee Auditorium

The sweetest ballet we could ever dream of is at the Southern Jubilee this month. The classic Grimm Brother’s tale has taken on a whole new twist thanks to the Alberta Ballet. The brother and sister duo get lost in a dark forest with all kinds of surprising characters including; the mysterious sandman, dew fairies, an ice cream witch, and some nasty-looking gingerbread men. Can they make it out alive?

YYC Food & Drink Experience

When: March 15 to 31
Where: Various Venues

If you love the restaurant scene or are just an unflappable foodie, this is the event for you. Restaurants and eateries from all over Calgary are coming together to give us a tasting experience like no other. There will be set menus for those who want an adventure for their taste buds. Calgary has an amazing food scene and is something that many look forward to when there is a new dish to enjoy. Perfect for a date night.

The Girl on the Train

When: March 16 to April 14
Where: Vertigo Theatre

Like the movie only better, you can see this chilling thriller live on stage. Based on the best-selling book by Paula Hawkins, we get to witness how one woman’s obsession with “the perfect couple” that she watches from her train ride get mixed up in a world of murder and intrigue. After observing something shocking, she begins to investigate what happened only to face some dangerous secrets and hard realities. Who doesn’t love a musical hailing from the 1960’s? You can’t stop the beat when a young Baltimore girl with big dreams sets out to get on a popular TV show. With hilarity, warmth, and fun songs along the way you can watch how our plucky protagonist stops at nothing to make the impossible possible. It is toe-tapping, sing-a-long fun with all the classic songs, “Welcome to the 60’s” and “Good Morning Baltimore.” Prepare to cheer her on.

An upcoming Indigenous science night is bound to give you a window into what our First Nation friends have to share with us. You can get a good view of their culture by listening to the tales of the Elders and Knowledge Keepers, enjoy a hula-hooping session and drumming circle (maybe even make your own drum), participate in an intertribal dance party, and learn how our native plants make some sounds of their own. This is a fascinating event especially when you have a mini-market to get a souvenir of your night.

Shen Yun in Calgary

When: March 29 to 31
Where: Southern Jubilee Auditorium

See a beautiful performance of Chinese culture here on our Alberta soil. A vivid celebration of 5000 years of heritage, Shen Yun gives a picture of what China was like before it became a communist country. The beautiful mixture of dance and music tells many tales of Ancient Chinese wisdom with Taoist and Buddhist spirituality, that have captured imaginations for centuries. Allow this show to sweep you away and change your perspective.

As you can see, the winter is just starting to disappear but as this is Calgary our weather is unpredictable. So, we never know what is going to happen weather-wise but at least we know how to make our adventures here memorable and unlike any other. It doesn’t matter if it is rain, sunshine, or snow, Calgary knows how to put on a great event. Let’s continue by embracing our good times!
