Five Minutes With: Funk Band (un)decided

(un)decided is an 8-piece band based in Calgary, originally formed from a love of musical expression through jamming and freestyle cyphers. Their original songs blend neo-soul, RnB, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and funk to create a unique sound shaped by an eclectic mix of musical and cultural influences. The band features members of Canadian, Indonesian, Nigerian, Japanese, Sierra Leonean and Venezuelan heritage.

(un)decided has been focused on writing original songs and playing shows over the past year, including performances at Sled Island 2025 and National Music Centre’s CIBC Summer Series at the King Eddy. (un)decided is all about bringing joy, self-expression, and connection to every stage and having a blast while doing it. They aim to create music that’s fresh, funky, and hard to label (in the best way). Their first single, “Pull Up”, is available on all platforms.

Favourite musician growing up:

Too many to pick! Clear inspirations are Sade, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z, Casiopea, Alfa Mist, Quincy Jones, Bob Marley, and Michael Jackson, among many others. Definitely forgetting some, though!

Favourite musician now:

Doechii, Rawayana, Yussef Dayes, Tom Misch, fox capture plan, Lunatic Soul, JID, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar (again, among many others!)

Guilty pleasure song:

Bit of a cop-out answer, but we don’t think there should be any guilt with listening to any music. You feel what you feel!

Live show ritual:

In the green room, vocalists doing vocal warm-ups, drummer warms up hands with rudiment exercise. Sometimes we do a group meditation session. Right before hitting the stage, a big band huddle to hype ourselves up.

Favourite local musician:

Calgary is a city full of talent, hard to pick one! Check out The Blue, K-Riz, Hip Hip Thursday, BKay, Tea Fannie, KtheChosen, Oranje, Polo Sho, Yasin Elahee & Fog of Sound, Zenon, Rome IX, Saint Heston, The Strangers Combo… Too many to name!

EP or LP?

LP. The album is a sacred art that has to be preserved in this age of virality and singles. An album is a holistic encapsulation of an artist’s expression, mood, mode and perspective of that time. You get to really know an artist by listening to an album front to back, appreciating both the big hits and the deep cuts, whereas you don’t get that same kind of relationship by putting out EPs and singles, although they are necessary to get the ball rolling sometimes.

Early bird or night owl?

Our group is somewhat divided on this – some are early birds, and some are night owls. Whether it’s an 8 AM recording session at the studio or rehearsals going till midnight, we have to be ready to be either to make the music happen!

Road or studio?

At the time of writing this, we have yet to perform as a group out of town. As such, we have very limited experience being on the road. The default answer would go to studio then. But we absolutely live for the stage and love performing for audiences, both new and familiar!

Any shows or albums coming up?

As show opportunities pop up, we will be focused on releasing more singles this year to increase our online presence. Our goal is to eventually produce an album sometime in 2027. Stay tuned!

Long & McQuade Chinook! We’ve spent countless hours and dollars in that place – no regrets!
