Explore a vibrant mixed media art show inspired by Nature at cSPACE Marda Loop, where artist Barb DeRousie’s work will be showcased from July 27th (starting at 1pm) to August 10 (ends at 12pm), 2026.
Barb recently relocated to Calgary from Vancouver Island, where she drew inspiration from the region’s natural beauty, from rainforests to the sea. Her childhood experience of living on coastal lighthouses and her connection to her First Nations heritage hold profound significance for her and are reflected in her art, hence, the exhibit’s title, ROOTS.
Barb creates intuitively, particularly at the outset of a piece, working in multiples, and allowing a call-and-response process that enables her to paint more from a felt sense rather than relying on a reference or having a predetermined outcome. She prefers to take artistic licence by disrupting realism, often with the use of collage elements, which gives her more freedom to be expressive in her work. Barb is excited to re-establish herself as an artist in Calgary and to share her work with you.
We invite you to meet the artist at the Opening Reception on Thursday, July 30th from 5 – 8pm. Everyone welcome, free admission, wheelchair accessible. Come celebrate and support local art!
