Many locals will testify that Calgary’s skyline often does not get the credit it deserves. Between the iconic Calgary Tower and the luminescent windows of the Telus Sky, there is a lot to admire. So, why not do so at 40 storeys high while enjoying a beautifully-cooked New York Strip and some fresh caviar at Major Tom Bar?
Somewhat of a hidden gem, Major Tom is located on the 40th floor of Stephen Avenue Place, a building connecting the Plus 15 pathways on the corner of 2nd St and 7th Ave. As you walk into the lobby, there is not much to hint at the restaurant above aside from an all-too-inconspicuous sign and directory by the elevators.
On the screen, select the 40th floor and you will be directed to a specific elevator with only two preset destinations – the ground floor and Major Tom Bar. Shortly after, you will be careened upwards, directly to your destination, until finally, you will come to a stop several storeys up.
If you have never been here before, it is hard to anticipate what awaits behind the elevator doors. Upon stepping into the hallway, down to the left is the hostess stand. Take a look beyond, and you’ll see the entryway to Major Tom’s elegant dining room full of warmly-lit tables and patrons conversing over them. With the moody ambience and suave décor, just a glimpse into the dining room is enticing enough – but wait until you see the view.
Major Tom Bar overlooks the vast skyline of Calgary and beyond, with everything from the Calgary Tower to the Beltline District in plain view. During a winter night, you can watch steam plume from the towers and lose yourself in the endless flecks of light emitting from apartment windows. Furthermore, you can witness everything the view has to offer while enjoying some incredible food.
The ambience at Major Tom is elegant and simple, with a chic interior inspired by modern steakhouses and speakeasy bars. The menu echoes this concept with a brief yet inviting selection of dishes with fresh and local ingredients.
The menu begins with hors d’oeuvres, which include the must-try Major Tots. A fluffy bed of fried potato is topped with Smoked Sturgeon and Pickled Onion, and each order comes with two pieces. The dish is an excellent pallet teaser and a bite-sized representation of what is yet to come.
For those looking to dial up the decadence this holiday season, Major Tom offers a caviar service with two distinct selections. The Caviar comes with puffed crackers and offers a mild, briny flavour which pairs excellently with the vista of Calgary’s skyline.
The Vegetables and Appetizers are decidedly made to share amongst family and friends, although they can also make a satisfying light meal for one. The rotating selection of fresh Oysters, with a house-made hot sauce and Green Apple Mignonette, is an excellent choice to precede the main courses. Also from the Appetizer list is the Salmon Crudo – thick, sashimi-style cuts of salmon are perfectly marinated in a tangy vinaigrette and olive oil.
The menu at Major Tom also features a hand-made pasta selection with four distinct choices ranging from traditional Spaghetti to a hearty Beef & Pork Rigatoni. Also part of the list is a rich and umami-filled Cavatelli with Elm Oyster Mushrooms and Brown Butter. Whether you’re ordering all for yourself or plan to share with the table, the dish comes highly recommended.
Finally, the Major Tom Beef Program is designed for true steak lovers. It offers true Alberta Beef ranging from Filet Mignon to dry-aged Bone-in Striploin. Of course, there is an A5 Wagyu selection featuring two tender cuts.
Because of its hidden location up in Stephen Avenue Tower, Major Tom Bar may not be an obvious choice for everyone. But once this hidden gem has been discovered, you’ll understand why others consider Major Tom to be an iconic spot in Calgary’s ever-evolving fine dining culture.
