Comedian Alex Jocko brings warmth, wit, and a dash of wordplay to the stage with a brand of comedy rooted in personal storytelling and optimism. Drawing inspiration from her own life, Jocko’s sets balance lighthearted reflection with sharp comedic timing — a style shaped by local influences and a deep appreciation for the craft.

How would you describe your comedy style?
I am a big fan of anecdotal comedy – most of my material is about my life. I like to keep my act positive and optimistic, with just a little bit of wordplay when I can get away with it.
Who are some of your influences?
So many of the local Edmonton comics are big influences to me. I feel like anytime I have a conversation with a comic, I end up coming home and writing a new bit.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Robin Williams for sure – from Mrs. Doubtfire to The Invention of Golf, he always put a smile on my face.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
So many to choose from! I’ve been listening to Rebecca Reeds and Jackie Pirico a lot lately.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I love to have a cup of tea, look over my notes and pick out my set list. And if I can squeeze in a quick jog or bike ride before a show, that workout usually helps me focus on what I am aiming to do that night.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
The Underdog Comedy Show (Thursday nights at The BlackDog Freehouse). The crowd is always supportive, and a bunch of comics turn up for the draw each show, so it’s just a great room to play in with a good hang. Plus, it’s Canada’s longest running free comedy show – how cool is that?!
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I have an ongoing bit about my husband and I celebrating our wedding with traditional anniversary gifts. I have so much fun adding to it each year! Next year will be our 10th anniversary, so pressure is on to make it a good gift for the bit (and, ya know, for the joy of our marriage).
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
I like to listen to comedy albums while I’m working, but nothing beats a live show!
Tell us a joke about your city.
I moved to Edmonton in 2010, and I gotta say – barely any Edmon’s. Where are they all hiding, and how many make a ton?
Do you have anything to promote right now?
On December 4t, I will be headlining my favourite show – The Underdog Comedy Show!
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
Jules Balluffi! Technically, she’s a NYC comic now – but she started in Edmonton, and she is a rising star! Or Hayley Sinclair!
