Homegrown Business: Geison Hidalgo & Alina Zhuk of Quora Strings

What is your business called and what does it do?

We are Quora Strings, a Calgary-based violin duo specializing in live music entertainment for weddings, corporate events, private gatherings, and more. We bring a blend of classical elegance and modern flair, performing everything from timeless masterpieces to contemporary hits in a very engaging show-style way.

Quora Strings is not just about playing melodies on a violin—we create a full, immersive musical experience! We perform amplified through a professional PA system, blending rich, high-quality backing tracks with our live violin performances, delivering a sound that feels like a full orchestra is right there with you.

What made you want to do this work?

Music has been an integral part of our lives since childhood. With over 20 years of experience in classical music and five years performing aboard luxury cruise ships worldwide, we’ve seen firsthand how live music transforms moments into unforgettable experiences. Quora Strings was born from our passion for creating those magical moments for our audience.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

Many events settle for background music that lacks a personal touch. We wanted to change that by offering high-quality, engaging live violin performances that upscale any special occasion—from a very formal wedding to a corporate event, a romantic proposal, or even an intimate birthday celebration. We believe that music should not only complement an event but become an unforgettable part of it.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Our clients range from engaged couples looking for elegant wedding music to corporate professionals planning high-end events. We also perform for private celebrations, cultural festivals, and even surprise proposals. Lately, something very engaging and high-energy has been performing live music with DJs for nightclub parties!

Essentially, anyone who wants to add a sophisticated and memorable musical touch to their event is our ideal client.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

We offer live music performances customized for each event. Clients can book us directly or through event platforms, and we tailor our setlists to fit their vision. Our pricing depends on factors like performance duration, special requests, and additional services such as song arrangements, extra amplified sound systems, or themed costumes (e.g., Bridgerton Style, Masquerade parties).

Where in the city can we find your profession?

You can find us performing at Calgary’s most beautiful wedding venues, luxury hotels, and corporate events. We’ve played at venues like The Fairmont Palliser, Lake Louise, Holt Renfrew, The Calgary Winter Club, and Maple Dell Acres. We’re also available for private events anywhere in the city and beyond Alberta!

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

What makes your duo different from other live music options?

Quora Strings offers more than just background music—we create immersive performances that engage and captivate audiences. With our extensive repertoire of over 300 songs, our fully wireless setup for outdoor events, and our experience performing worldwide, we bring professionalism, showmanship, and elegance to every event. Plus, we personalize every performance, tailoring them according to every occasion!

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is seeing the emotional impact of our music—a bride tearing up as she walks down the aisle, guests dancing to a lively tune at a reception, and our favourite one: kids listening and watching us completely astonished. Music is powerful, and being part of someone’s most important moments is an honour.

The worst part? Carrying all the equipment! While we love performing, setting up and transporting gear (especially in Calgary winters) can be a challenge.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

Why did the violinist bring a ladder to the concert?
Because they wanted to reach the high notes!

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

A very important part of our business is collaborating with other professionals in related fields. Makeup artists and hairstylists play a fundamental role in making us look our best for performances. Another essential alliance is with professional photographers, who capture every moment beautifully and help keep our social media content looking impeccable.

We deeply appreciate the work of these talented individuals who contribute to the success of live entertainment.
