Karen Horte, the creative force behind Horte Interiors, is redefining the design+build experience in Calgary and surrounding areas. Karen personally manages every aspect of her projects—from interior design and cabinetry to décor and furniture—ensuring a seamless and personalized journey for her clients. Karen’s mission is to transform houses into functional, beautiful oases that reflect the unique needs of those who call them home.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Horte Interiors is a design+build company where homeowners come to me for interior design, cabinetry, décor, and furniture needs. Unlike many firms, I don’t outsource key decisions to contractors. I manage the entire process, ordering products and ensuring every detail is accounted for during both the design and construction phases.
What made you want to do this work?
I’ve dreamed of being an interior designer since childhood! In fact, I remember writing about it in my school project books. This career combines creativity and problem-solving in a way I’ve always found fulfilling.
What problem does your business aim to solve?
My goal is to create homes that feel safe, comfortable, and uniquely personal to the people living in them. Everyone deserves a space that serves as their oasis, a place to recharge and feel at peace after a busy day.
Who are your typical clients?
Most of my clients are families, empty nesters, or retirees who are downsizing. They’re looking for beautiful designs for everyday life.
Where in the city can we find your services?
I’m a Calgary interior design studio that serves Calgary and the surrounding areas. I also travel to other locations if required for homeowners. My work takes me to Edmonton, Canmore, and Revelstoke British Columbia to name a few!
What’s the best question a prospective customer can ask when comparing services?
A great question would be, “Who will manage my project and make decisions?” My answer: Me! I handle all aspects of the process, from design, selections, and drafting to on-site walkthroughs and project management. With me, you have one dedicated point of contact from start to finish, ensuring no disconnect or miscommunication.
What’s the best and worst part about what you do?
The best part is helping people live in beautifully designed, functional spaces that suit their lifestyles and bring them joy. On the other hand, managing logistics, supply chains, and construction schedules can be challenging. Coordinating busy trades and staying on top of supply chain delays requires constant attention, but it’s all part of the job. This is why I have dedicated systems and procedures in place to ensure success.
