Homegrown Business: Tricia of Blush and Tales

Meet Tricia, the owner of Blush and Tales, a business dedicated to creating timeless keepsakes and meaningful home decor. Tricia’s passion lies in transforming spaces with unique, handmade pieces that blend timeless elegance and contemporary charm. She aims to offer a platform for individuals to find inspiring decor that resonates with their style, all without breaking the bank. Connecting with customers and fostering a sense of community around home decor are key aspects of Tricia’s journey.

Blush and Tales

What is your business called and what does it do?

I started Blush and Tales with the intent to create timeless keepsakes and meaningful home decor pieces that act as the perfect statement piece in every space. From soothing neutral colour palettes to nurturing textures, I strive to create environments that promote relaxation and rest, and most importantly, joy in every home. Understanding the profound impact of surroundings on emotional balance and self-care, every vision and design that comes to life is thoughtfully created to promote mindfulness, and I aim to create each piece that will serve as a gentle reminder to prioritize mental health through the beauty of one’s surroundings.

What made you want to do this work?

The inspiration to do this line of work stems from a deep passion for creativity and transforming living spaces with unique home decor pieces that value timeless elegance, modern minimalism and contemporary charm. I love the joy that comes with seeing Blush and Tales home decor in my customers’ homes – knowing that my pieces help create environments that reflect their unique personalities and lifestyles is incredibly rewarding! I also love creating and establishing a community where people can connect + gather through their common interest in home decor. Aside from creating, getting to connect with my customers on a deeper level is my absolute favourite. I love connecting with customers and small business owners alike – being able to connect with so many wonderful individuals online and in person is truly the best part!

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

I wanted to create a platform where individuals can easily find unique and inspiring decor pieces that resonate with their personal style, without breaking the bank! I wanted to offer a wide selection of handmade products that cater to diverse tastes and preferences, and empower individuals to create spaces they love that reflect their individuality and bring them joy.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

My clientele spans various age groups – and this is what I love about what I do! My target demographic encompasses a wide range of different life stages – from young adults setting up their first home, to empty nesters looking to refresh their space. Expressing one’s personal style through their living environment is such a profound universal language!

How does your business make money? How does it work?

My business profits from product sales. This is first done by captivating my audience with my vision + designs through visualization, and I do this by optimizing Instagram and my website, where I can truly showcase how my customers can combine my pieces together to beautify their space. My products are available to purchase through my website, and at various local markets that I participate in throughout each season.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

When I am not making products for my online orders (yes, shipping is available to all of Canada + USA!), you can find me and my handmade items at various local markets held all year round in YYC.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

What sets me apart is the vision that I have for my small business. I am not just looking to make sales – of course, that’s important, but making meaningful connections and making a positive impact (regardless of the magnitude) will always be paramount. I love approaching my business as a way to make an impact in my growing community.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

My favourite part is being able to share my work with customers who have genuine appreciation for my handmade goods, and being able to unleash my passion for creating on a daily basis. I have the freedom to create and inspire, experiment and make mistakes, and make a positive impact by enhancing people’s spaces with my handmade items. Being able to connect with my wonderful customers is also one of the greatest joys of what I do.

One of the challenges of being a small business owner is the constant juggling act of managing so many aspects of the business. They weren’t kidding when they said I’d wear many hats! Beyond all the challenges and uncertainties, it is so much fun and very rewarding to run a small business.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

I love the fact that I have endless roles and titles with what I do! If I were to re-create my “About Blush and Tales” page on my website, I could get silly with it and the “employee roster” would consist of many of the same headshot photos of me that hold different titles – owner, marketing director, content creator, administrator, business development + operations manager.. the list is endless!

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful small business owners and artisans ever since I started Blush and Tales in September 2023. I am beyond thankful for all the kindness and support that this community has shown me, and I will always do my very best to reciprocate all the love by being their biggest cheerleader. I would love to highlight and put Nicole from Pink + Pretties in the spotlight. She also happens to be one of my dearest friends in real life! She creates the most beautiful earrings and bracelets that are sure to compliment your everyday outfits. I can’t begin to count how many pairs of her handmade earrings I personally own! Her pieces are created with so much intention, and they are so full of character and life. She is also the biggest supporter of small businesses – including mine – which is all the more reason why so many people love her and her business!
