Shannon Carla King is one of those rare individuals who is genuinely curious about the world and the people in it. Positive energy radiates from her and creates a gravitational pull for like-minded individuals. In professional and personal settings, she asks meaningful questions of herself and others, respectfully challenging the status quo with a focus on possibilities that takes the topic beyond the surface to a more meaningful place.
Raised in rural Alberta, Shannon learned the value of a hard day’s work. It is where the vast landscapes and natural beauty ignited a passion for art. Drawing inspiration from the prairies, her art always reflects her deep connection to the land and a profound respect for nature.
Now a full-time artist who bravely stepped away from a corporate role in the energy sector to follow her passion, Shannon is merging her rural, artistic roots with her professional experience and natural ability to engage with others. The canvasses in her Reclamation series showcase the beauty of the habitats around us and create an opportunity to challenge our understanding of reclamation. Shannon’s artistic work truly encapsulates a narrative of growth, passion, and purpose and her commitment to creating meaningful change through art.

Which ’hood are you in?
I reside in Calgary, AB (Crescent Heights) painting reclaimed sites through the fall, winter and spring months. I paint the protected conservation islands of Mahone Bay from my studio: Whiskey Jack Gallery (in Nova Scotia) during the summer months.
What do you do?
I am a reclamation, preservation, and conservation artist and illustrator. I use acrylic medium on canvas to ensure environmental projects have a voice by reaching new audiences to inform, connect and instill pride in the great work that is being done to protect and heal the earth. I was recently nominated for the Alberta Order of Excellence for this work.
What are you currently working on?
I have just wrapped up writing and illustrating The Mahone Bay Islands Colouring Book which teaches kids about the protected Mahone Bay Islands in Nova Scotia. I also just completed illustrations for the children’s book written by Tanya Richens, Adventures in Land Reclamation: Exploring Jobs for a Greener Future. I am constantly growing my portfolio of fine art that depicts both reclamation and conservation sites across Canada – watch for some local favourites like Carburn Park in Calgary.
Where can we find your work?
I have exhibited recently at TELUS SPARK, Calgary Public Library, Chinook Blast and local industry events. As a private, pop-up gallery, I can be scheduled as an artist or keynote speaker for unique events to help teach the public about reclamation success stories. Please also visit my website.
