“A Day in the Life” with: Filmmaker-Photographer Morgan Pinnock

Morgan Pinnock has been recognized as an award-winning photographer and filmmaker; her work has been awarded by AMPIA, the Advertising Club of Edmonton, the Edmonton International Film Festival, and the On Art Film Festival. Her films have screened in Poland, the United States, the Netherlands, and Canada.

Her pathway into filmmaking began on the ground with accounts and production at an advertising and video production firm in Edmonton, leading her to film, direct, and edit on the job. She now works independently as a producer, director, cinematographer, and photographer.

Morgan is also an accomplished printmaker, working in linocut and letterpress. The Society of Northern Alberta Printmakers (SNAP) has published her work in SNAPLINE Repair Edition from 2022. Celebrating relief printmaking, her enormous linocut recently anchored an open studio event at SNAP, with a broad audience cheering as a steamroller helped make the print.

Besides finding mentors active in the arts disciplines she is attracted to, she has studied fine art at Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts) and MacEwan University, and holds a diploma in Arts and Cultural Management.

This soft-spoken, introspective artist is a powerhouse: definitely one to watch.

I’ve been really into self portraiture lately, as an easy way to experiment with lighting and different concepts without the pressure of planning a formal shoot.

I love collecting photobooks and spend a lot of time admiring photos I wish I had taken. This is Peggy Nolan’s book, Juggling Is Easy, published by TBW Books.
A weekend darkroom session at SNAP (community printshops are the best!).
My dog Homer needs his two walks a day – that’s a non-negotiable, no matter how busy I get.

Edmonton has a great food scene – sometimes I pretend I’m not lactose intolerant and treat myself to pizza.

I usually end the day by going for a bike ride – sadly, that means on Zwift right now with daylight hours dwindling.

Which ’hood are you in?

I live in the Boyle Street neighbourhood.

What do you do?

After spending the past 7 years working on a video team in the agency world, I recently returned to Alberta Wildfire, where I work as a communications specialist (I was a Wildland Firefighter for 5 seasons while I was a student). I also work independently in photography and video, all while attempting to maintain an art practice and training for my next cycling race.

What are you currently working on?

This year has been a big one as far as career changes go, but I am currently navigating the freelance waters and finding the joy in art-making again. I find myself being pulled more and more toward my photography practice, where I am exploring documentary storytelling through still images. I shoot mostly in medium format film and have been spending some time in the darkroom developing and printing my photos.

Where can we find your work?

My short film Lifeline was screened at the Calgary Underground Film Festival at the Globe Cinema, and in Warsaw, part of the closing events of the On Art Film Festival, where it was awarded best short film.

Other projects I have worked on recently are episodes of the CBC series On Design and the documentary The Secret Long Tree Society, which are both produced by Sticks & Stones and available on CBC Gem. For more info, check my Instagram.
