“A Day in the Life” with: Visual Artist Mascha Hellenbrand

My name is Clint Schrenk, and I own six of Mascha Hellenbrand’s pieces.

She is kind. Compassionate to strangers. She has a funny Dutch accent. She used to ski professionally for the Dutch national alpine team, lived in eight countries, and became a full-time artist in 2001 after a car accident in 2000. She is a funny person who wants others to laugh and feel better about themselves.

Her paintings make me feel happy every day. An unplanned chaos that somehow makes me feel calm. The colours are maybe chosen, but the brushstrokes are mostly spontaneous — like they were made from the soul, without any analytical thinking.

That’s the best way I know how to describe it.

I go every week to the mountains around Banff and Canmore to pick up fresh spring water, for new inspiration and just to be surrounded by nature.
I love big organic paintings that make a room burst with energy
I like to paint with more dramatic colours as well, and let a nature scene just decide how it wants to be.
I used to ski for the Dutch national alpine team, and after a car accident, I became a full-time artist. I had a photographer from a magazine visiting my studio in Holland one day, and he asked me what I would never do; I told him smoking or drinking. He then decided to make a picture with me smoking and a wine glass, people who know me laughed, of course.
I love to take my daughter around the world for art trips. Venice…we flew there just for a few days, afterwards I took her on a sailing trip to Croatia & Slovenia. She loved both adventures!

I used to paint funny people and sell them in galleries around the world ( Dubai, Amsterdam, Johannesburg, Casablanca, Copenhagen, Abu Dhabi, Montego Bay ). When I moved to Calgary in 2013, people told me you’d better paint mountains, trees or bears here …I was very lost when I moved here at first, both as an artist and immigrant. Now I love it out here!

Which ’hood are you in?

My art studio and home are in Deer Run SE, Calgary. I live 1 street away from Fish Creek Park, and I am more often in the park than in the city. I am more a nature person than a city gal 🙂

What do you do?

I create large paintings. I have been a full-time artist since 2001. I lived in 8 countries for my art. I studied sports and nutrition. I do help people with chronic pain. I also take care of a 24-year-old male with special needs. He likes to create art with me and walk 3 times a day for an hour in the park! Then I volunteer to cook for elderly people in the neighbourhood.

What are you currently working on?

I am painting a few new XL paintings for my exhibition at Bow River Brewing, Calgary. I started this show on May 6th, 2026. The grand opening will be on June 6th from 5 to 9 pm. Everyone is welcome to walk in for free!

Where can we find your work?

You can see some of my mountain art on @camount_gallery Instagram.

More paintings on personal account @mascha.paintings

People can visit my art studio in Deer Run by appointment through Mascha.paintings@gmail.com, and Bow River Brewing is showing some of my mountain collection paintings inside (the mountain paintings on the outside of the building are made by someone else).
