“A Day in the Life” with Calgary-based Visual Artist Emma Sherratt

Emma Sherratt is noted for her expressive, revealing and emotional work. There is often an undercurrent that you can’t quite put your finger on when viewing her artwork. A certain hum that draws you in and keeps you coming back again and again.

Don’t let her quiet demeanour fool you as Emma is an independent, adventurous soul. Born in Australia, she first came to Canada as a ski and snowboard instructor, following the seasonal snow between our Rockies and ski resorts in New Zealand. These days she and her partner Colin enjoy participating in a variety of sports activities.

Alongside working toward a degree in Advertising, Emma’s interests are varied. Her studio is her personal retreat. The creative processes of visual art drew her in like a magnet and it’s in this space that she has found pure freedom of expression. You can see it in the bold colours and lines deployed in her paintings and aspects of strength and vulnerability expressed in her drawings and figurative works.

Which ’hood are you in?

My name is Emma Kate Sherratt and I go by EmmaKateArtStudio on Instagram. I’m an intuitive abstract artist based in Calgary, Capitol Hill area, where I predominantly work from home. I also work occasionally at the MAUD Collective Studio, where I was fortunate enough to do a six-month residency in 2023.

What do you do?

My art is largely inspired by my changing moods and the everyday human experience: I feel what I paint, and I paint what I feel. I am also a university student, studying advertising part-time online, and an art therapy practitioner student.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on transferring my experiences to others by way of offering accessible workshops that are low-cost or on a pay-what-you-want basis, for folks of all skill levels. The workshops cover mark-making, colour choices, concept design and abstracting elements of realism. We challenge the perception of not being “artistic enough” to create art, with a therapeutic focus and elements of guided meditation, as this has become a key element in my art practice and everyday health.

Where can we find your work?

You can find my portfolio or sign up for workshops through Instagram, or on my website.
