“A Day in the Life” with: Visual Artist Lucie Bause

Lucie Bause is intrinsically a sensual being. She experiences the world deeply through her senses and intuition, feeling the strong connection between humans, nature and spirit. Her art is a translation of these senses into a form that profoundly resonates within the heart of her audience. Even in its ‘apparent simplicity,’ her work speaks to the deepest yearnings of the human heart. A few years back, I had a strong reaction to one of her pieces, and found myself sobbing as I experienced what I can only describe as an intense love emanating from the painting. I know that I’m not the only one to have had such an experience with her work!

Lucie believes that communication between humans and the essence of nature is fundamental if we are to live a meaningful heart-centred life. This belief has led her on a lifelong journey of exploration in numerous forms of direct and energetic communication. Lucie has a degree in English and Spanish literature and studied Spanish while living in Spain for a year. She has spent time in the Amazon in Peru with a Shipibo family, learning about their connection to nature and plant spirits. She has learnt to practice ‘Forest Bathing’ in the boreal forest of northern Alberta, and has studied Shamanism to learn about Indigenous culture and connection to the earth and spirit realms. Recently, Lucie has trained as a Parelli Natural Horsemanship Practitioner, learning to connect and communicate with horses in a way that fosters mutual trust and respect while working in partnership.

All of this accumulated knowledge deeply informs her art and her work as a gifted Artist-Educator, working with children, trauma survivors, First Nations, and others wishing to find healing and self-expression through art.

Which ‘hood are you in?

I live in a neighbourhood called Bow Ridge in Cochrane, a town on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, just northwest of Calgary.

What do you do?

I work as a Visual Artist and Educator. I create contemporary paintings inspired by Western Canada and its natural beauty. Most of my paintings are colourful and stylized mountain, ocean, or forest landscapes. My intention is to celebrate nature and bring joy and connection to viewers through my art. I love using bold colour in my work and feel that it is a wonderful visual tool to help express and share energy, memory, and emotion.

I also design and deliver acrylic painting and mixed-media art workshops for private and public groups in Calgary, Canmore, and Banff. I refer to many of my workshops as Creative Self-Care, as I like to focus on cultivating curiosity, relaxation, self-expression, and play.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a series of large, stylized landscape paintings to celebrate the four seasons. I have always enjoyed observing the change of the seasons, but I am also interested in relating them to the seasons of life we experience. As the seasons go by, I notice different things, and I am interested in how we relate as humans to the changing seasons of life as we grow, change, and mature. I look forward to finding a venue and inspiring quotations to pair with my paintings for an exhibition of this series called Celebrating Seasons in the near future.
