The Clothing Bar is the everyday affordable consignment store in the heart of Calgary’s Marda Loop. With her curated collection of chic pre-loved pieces, owner Katie is actively working to make the fashion industry more sustainable. We spoke with her to learn more.
What is your business called and what does it do?
It’s called The Clothing Bar! We’re a consignment store that specializes in stylish, pre-loved women’s fashion. We curate trendy, high-quality pieces and offer a fun, affordable, and eco-friendly shopping experience both in-store and online.
What made you want to do this work?
I’ve always loved fashion, but more importantly, I’ve loved helping people feel good in what they wear. Starting The Clothing Bar allowed me to combine style with sustainability, and create a space where community and confidence come first.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I wanted to tackle the waste and fast fashion problem by giving clothing a second life, and give people a guilt-free way to shop. I also wanted to create a local space where fashion feels accessible, inclusive, and fun.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Our clientele is mostly women who love a good deal, care about sustainability, and appreciate unique style, ranging from trendy college students to busy moms and stylish professionals. Our community is diverse, fashion-forward, and loyal!
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We consign clothing, which means we partner with people in our community to sell their gently used fashion. We split the sales with the consignors and make money on our portion. We also sell accessories, new arrivals, and curated pieces both in-store and online.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
You can find The Clothing Bar right in the heart of Marda Loop—we’re your go-to local stop for a fashion refresh!
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
Q: “How do you decide what items to accept for consignment?”
A: We look for items that are in great condition, on-trend or classic in style, and suitable for the current or upcoming season. Our goal is to curate a shop that feels like a boutique, not a thrift store—so we’re selective but fair!
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is seeing someone light up when they find a piece they love, especially when it’s unexpected or totally them. I’m also extremely proud of being able to employ so many amazing women as well! The worst part? Saying no to clothes we can’t accept—it’s never personal, just part of keeping the store curated.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
“I’m just doing market research” as I continue to go shopping on the daily basis LOL
Where can we follow you?
