Five Minutes With: Calgary Prog-Metal Band Nok Novum

Nok Novum, an instrumental powerhouse from Canada, emerged onto the music scene in early 2008. Initially conceived as a duo featuring guitarist Grant Cooper and drummer Brady Mason, the band spent years honing a unique, textured sound that would become their signature.

In 2012, Nok Novum made their mark with their self-titled debut album. Released on August 5th, the record showcased a clever fusion of 70s progressive rock, jazz-fusion, and heavy metal, creating a chaotic and mesmerizing soundscape.

The band’s evolution continued in late 2013 with the addition of Scott Giffin on guitar and Cam Dougall on bass. This expanded lineup catapulted Nok Novum to the forefront of Calgary’s metal scene, earning them a reputation as one of the city’s top live acts. Their performances were a unique spectacle, seamlessly blending captivating visuals with their intricate music to create an immersive audiovisual experience.

2015 saw the release of two critically acclaimed singles, “Shiryō” and “Ghost Farmer,” which further cemented the band’s status among fans and industry peers alike.

Since 2016, Nok Novum has taken a step back from the limelight, allowing members to focus on personal endeavours and family life. However, this hiatus hasn’t halted their creative process. The band has been meticulously working on their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Nok Novum II,” promising fans that the wait will be well worth it.

As Nok Novum continues to push the boundaries of progressive instrumental music, they remain poised to captivate audiences once again with their innovative sound and visionary approach to performance.

Favourite musician growing up:

Let’s go with bands. During my pre-teen years, probably Primus. Teen years onward I’m going to say Opeth.

Favourite musician now:

Opeth, but that’s loose ‘cause picking favourites is tough.

Guilty pleasure song:

Going to go with an old disco banger here: Vicki Sue Robinson – Turn the Beat Around, though there really is no guilt, it’s a sick song.

Live show ritual:

Crack a clean, cold, Cariboo lager with the boys.

Favourite local musician:

The Stampeders?

EP or LP?

No preference

Early bird or night owl?

Early bird in terms of having the energy to get things done, but inspiration often hits at night.

Road or studio?

Studio. I like the creative component of being in the studio and piecing it all together.

Any shows or albums coming up?

Our sophomore album, Nok Novum II, was just released in August, and can be found on all streaming platforms. This album is a culmination of years of writing and recording, so we’re pretty happy to finally have it out in the world. Check it out!
