Homegrown Business: Tracy Titherington of the Vegan Popcorn Company

What is your business called and what does it do?

We make small-batch gourmet popcorn made with 100% plant-based ingredients.

What made you want to do this work?

Our mission is ultimately to save the world but first, we have to change people’s minds about vegan food. We need to change it from “ew vegan” to “ooh vegan!!”

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

We are trying to bring a vegan presence to any event worth watching.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Our niche market is, of course, vegans, but more and more people are going dairy-free.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Most commercial snack foods contain modified milk products so we provide an option that almost everyone can eat.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We are located in Calgary, Alberta and we rent a kitchen and produce everything by hand. We make most of our money at farmers’ markets and doing corporate gift baskets. We are currently looking for retailers and would love to get into the movies!

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

The question we get asked most is “Isn’t all popcorn vegan?” (Answer: popcorn is but the toppings usually contain dairy)

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part of what we do is meeting and talking to people at markets. This is also the worst part!! If I have to chuckle at “but bacon tho!!” One more time….

Where can we follow you?

We can be found on Instagram and Facebook as well as our website.

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

One of our favourite businesses is CrossFit Elevate in Calgary. We have sponsored competitions at this gym and they are truly passionate about fitness for everyone. Their clients range in age from 6 to 86.
