We met with Stefan, a dedicated member of the board of directors at the Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club (CRLC). Founded in 1959, the CRLC is a vibrant community of craft and collectors enthusiasts, passionate about promoting the collection of rocks and minerals and fostering related arts such as jewellery making and lapidary work. Stefan’s involvement with the club spans 14 years, beginning with his introduction to the club through its annual show.
Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
We are a craft and collectors club, involved in promoting the collection of rocks and minerals and the creation of many kinds of related arts such as jewellery and polishing (lapidary).
What problem does it aim to solve?
We operate classes and a jewellery and lapidary workshop with all the tools needed.
When did you start/join it?
I’ve been involved with the club for 14 years.
What made you want to get involved?
After attending the annual show, I joined up and I’ve been helping out the club in many positions since then.
What was the situation like when you started?
The club has changed a lot since it was formed in 1959 in a member’s living room. For many years our annual show was held at the Hillhurst Arena and then Vivo and now at Genesis Centre. In 2016 we opened our own workshop space in NE Calgary.
How can our readers help?
We’re always looking for new members to share their enthusiasm and experience in lapidary and jewellery. Members can help out by volunteering or instructing their own class.
Do you have any events coming up?
Our big fundraiser is our annual Rock & Gem show held the first weekend in May every year.
