Brian Stollery

How would you describe your comedy style?

Self-deprecating, observational, and energetic. I often tailor my set to suit my audience.

Who are some of your influences?

There are so many influences I’ve had over the years, many of them came in the form of edibles. But if you’re talking about comedians I would say: George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Burr–and those are just the guys I’ve stolen jokes from… KIDDING!

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

George Carlin. He was the greatest comedian who ever lived. But he’s dead now so his production has slowed considerably. Seriously though, I always enjoyed his social commentary. He used to say: “I do this real moron thing, and it’s called thinking.”

Who is your favourite comedian now?

One of my favourites now is Bill Burr. His style resonates with me.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Right before the show starts, I say something completely outrageous to the other comedians who are on the show. It loosens everyone up.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Probably the Absolute Comedy Club in Toronto. The audiences there have, generally, seen a lot of comedians, so they are ready to embrace where you want to take them. I recorded my latest album there. Plus there’s a magic mushroom shop just down the street.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I don’t really have a favourite bit. I’m proud of all my jokes. But comedy is very fluid so if I had to choose I would say the bit I am working on at the moment. Check me out on Spotify or Apple Music.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

I enjoy listening to comedians on SiriusXM (the JFL Canada Channel) and on Spotify.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Calgary is a funny city. If you Google “What’s to see in Calgary?”, the first thing that comes up is: “BANFF!” That’s not IN Calgary. That’s another place!

That’s like Googling “What’s to see in Toronto?”, and Google says: “Windsor!–they have a casino!!”

Do you have anything to promote right now?

My latest Album is coming out this month. It’s called Brian Stollery: He / He.

It can be purchased through iTunes or streamed on Spotify or Apple Music. I think it’s some of my best work.

I’m booking corporate Christmas shows right now. I still have a few dates left, so get in touch with me through my website to book your event soon.

Oh! By the way, if anyone’s interested, I also have a Nintendo Switch for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

The very talented Kevin Singh.
