Five Minutes With: Alt Hip Hop Artist Muj

Muj, born Mohammad Mujtaba Rashid, is a Canadian-Pakistani artist and alternative hip-hop musician who has been making music for six years. When he first started, he couldn’t afford studio time or engineers, so he taught himself how to do everything on his own. Over time, that turned into something he takes real pride in. Now he fully engineers, records, mixes, and masters his vocals from his bedroom studio using GarageBand, building each track from the ground up.

His style blends alternative and hip-hop influences, shaped by collaborations with artists in Calgary and around the world. Outside of the music itself, Muj handles all his own marketing — running his own ad campaigns and even running promotions for other artists through Spotify playlisting.

Independent, self-taught, and determined, Muj represents a new wave of young artists creating opportunities for themselves without waiting for permission.
