Five Minutes With: Funk Band ADEQUATE!

Prepare to groove to the electrifying rhythms and soulful melodies of ADEQUATE!, a dynamic four-piece funk band from Lethbridge, Alberta. Since their formation in 2014, this talented group has been delivering a powerful blend of classic funk, R&B, and original tunes that keep audiences dancing. Founded by Keenan Pezderic (drums and lead vocals), Scott Mezei (bass and backing vocals), and Josh Thorlakson (guitar and backing vocals), ADEQUATE! soon welcomed sound engineer and session player Shael Pezderic (guitar, percussion, backing vocals) into their ranks, completing their vibrant sound. Imagine the energy of Grand Funk Railroad, the soul of Stevie Wonder, and the edge of Led Zeppelin—all rolled into one unforgettable band.

Favourite musician growing up:

Led Zeppelin. They heavily influenced all of our playing.

Favourite musician now:

Vulfpeck. They are modern funk monsters who write amazingly catchy music and look like they are having the best time playing.

Guilty pleasure song:

David Lee Roth – Yankee Rose

Not so much because we like the song, but because it was on one of the only cassette tapes in the band vehicle and got blared loudly anytime we pulled we up to a band member’s house or venue.

Live show ritual:

We like to say movie quotes to each other but replace keywords with funk.

Example; “You want the funk? You can’t handle the funk!” Or “Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, hang on boys, it’s funky time!”

Favourite local musician:

Ryland Moranz. He is a Lethbridge-based folk singer-songwriter and delightful human being. Most of us have known him since we were kids and grew up listening to his music and sharing the stage with his various bands.

EP or LP?

Both are great! Though we do enjoy a good long album for travelling to gigs.

Early bird or night owl?

We are night owls who have been forced into early birding due to work haha.

Road or studio?

We are a live performance band. We love to play in front of people and make a party happen, so the road is our jam. We also enjoy being able to experiment while we play live and honing in on ideas through various shows.
