Tragedy Plus Time: Calgary Comedian Johnny Pogo

Johnny Pogo is a Calgary-based comedian who first stepped onto the stage with a mix of nerves and reckless confidence, quickly realizing that stand-up was his true calling. With a chaotic, edgy, and self-deprecating style, he delivers sharp, unapologetic humour that keeps audiences on their toes.

From cracking jokes about Metis history to poking fun at his own misadventures, Johnny has built a name for himself in the Calgary comedy scene.

Johnny Pogo

How would you describe your comedy style?

Chaotic, edgy and self-deprecating.

Who are some of your influences?

Louis CK, Ralphie May and Eddie Murphy

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Jerry Seinfeld, my dad got me into his show when I was young.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

I would have to say Andrew Schulz

What is your pre-show ritual?

I like to slap myself in the face and look at my hair in the mirror.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Calgary Yuk Yuk’s! We got some of the best crowds in Calgary

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I have this joke about Hudson’s Bay, the fur trade and beaver pelts. I’m Metis, so connecting history to private parts seemed very fitting.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Live shows, comedy is best experienced in person.

Tell us a joke about your city.

I was born in Regina, the city that smells like it sounds. Then I moved to Lethbridge for 8 years, but I quit smoking Meth so I moved to Airdrie.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

I have a bunch of small-town shows and out-of-province coming up over the next few months, but for Calgary people, I’ll be headlining Yuk Yuk’s on Sept 12 and 13.

Where can we follow you?

Instagram and Facebook. I got to a weird part of TikTok so deleted that. Or just stop by Airdrie and look for the guy with the big hair.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Lori Ferguson Ford
