Jakob Schäefer is a Calgary-based comedian who took an unconventional path into stand-up, blending his love for absurd humour with an eagerness to make audiences laugh at any cost. Known for his bizarre yet captivating style, Jakob draws inspiration from comedy legends like Andy Kaufman and Sacha Baron Cohen, crafting unpredictable performances that keep crowds on their toes. This summer, he’s launching a new comedy venue, Sandstone City, in Calgary’s Beltline, where he aims to create a fresh stage for local and touring comedians.
How would you describe your comedy style?
Absurd. Some people find it “bizarre”. To my defence, I try everything to make the audience laugh because when they don’t, it’s horrible.
Who are some of your influences?
Andy Kaufman talking about a cannonball and Sasha Baron Cohen’s first Borat movie.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
I grew up very serious no TV/Internet and no laughter.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Chris Rock.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I listen to the audience laughing and whisper Tony Robbins’ affirmations, trying not to run away… I’m extremely nervous before every show. Once I almost passed out at YukYuks.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
A while ago, I travelled to Edinburgh during their Fringe Festival. My friend and I decided to perform some comedy on the street in front of a cathedral. People threw coins at us and begged us to stop… – We collected £ 37,52 British Pound which bought us a loaf of bread. I think I prefer stages.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I used to do one that started out with: There is a new virus from China… And I always could feel the audience getting tense thinking I was going to talk about COVID. The actual joke was about TEMU, that always turned out to be a relief for everyone. I had lots of fun with that.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
Live at the club. Nothing better! Calgary has a solid scene and I also love to watch touring Comedians that stop by.
Tell us a joke about your city.
Breaking news… JUST-IN: Our prime minister stepped down. It’s sad but it’s TRU-DEAU
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I’m opening a new comedy venue in the Beltline this summer. It will be called Sandstone City – Instagram
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
Dale Ward, not that he needs it, but he’s extremely funny, I once saw him make a German laugh… He should have a Netflix special!
