Velet is a multi-functional, multi-service, one-stop shop for all things bikes, skis, and coffee. Providing a welcoming space for outdoor adventurers was the primary aim, with the coffee being a cozy addition that gives customers something to sip while they get needed repairs to their bikes or skis. By creating a place for the community to gather and learn, Velet offers much more than just caffeine and repairs. We chatted with founder Hakan Kayabasi to learn more.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Our business is called Velet Turkish word ‘Rascal’. We are a unique space in Calgary that combines a bike and ski shop with a cozy cafe. We repair bikes and skis, sell parts, and serve high-quality coffee and pastry. All under one roof. Our goal is to create a community hub where people can connect over their love for the outdoors.
What made you want to do this work?
I have always been passionate about cycling, skiing, and coffee culture. After years of being involved in these worlds, I wanted to create a space where I could bring them together while also building a welcoming environment for the community. Velet is the result of that dream.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I noticed that there weren’t many places where outdoor enthusiasts could get both expert service for their gear and enjoy a quality cup of coffee while connecting with like-minded people. I wanted to solve this by offering a shop that is not just transactional but also social, a place where repairs, conversations, and coffee all happen naturally.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Our clientele ranges from cyclists, skiers, and commuters to coffee lovers and curious passersby. We welcome everyone from serious athletes to families and casual riders, anyone who enjoys good service, good coffee, and a friendly atmosphere. Our door is open for everyone.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We generate revenue through bike and ski repairs and our cafe offerings.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
Velet is located at Unit 105, 206 11 Ave SE, in Calgary. We’re tucked away, but once people find us, they tend to come back!
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
At Velet, you’re not just another ticket in the queue. We take the time to understand your bike or ski needs, offer honest advice, and make sure you feel at home while you’re here. Plus, you can enjoy some of Calgary’s best coffee while we work on your gear.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is meeting incredible people every day and being part of their outdoor adventures. I love hearing stories from customers and sharing in their passion for cycling and skiing.
The worst part? Probably dealing with unexpected challenges like unfair city regulations or property issues that can make running a small business harder than it should be.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Why don’t bikes ever get tired?
Because they’re two-tired!
