Nusa's Bakery

What is your business called and what does it do?

Nusa’s Bakery. I make baked goods, mainly custom cake orders and sell other baked goods at pop-up markets. My markets take place across YYC in collaboration with different organizations. I also raise funds for donations through bake sales with multiple clubs at the University of Calgary.

What made you want to do this work?

I’ve always had a passion and interest in baking. My friends encouraged me to start something with it, and I continue to pursue it because I love sharing food with people. It brings people together and helps build community.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

I always found it difficult to find my own community. Starting Nusa’s Bakery helped me connect with other bakers who share the same love and passion for baking, as well as with my amazing customers. I’ve built so many great connections through it.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Mainly young adult women, mostly between 18 and 30 years old. Over 80% of my followers are women.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

I sell custom cakes and participate in markets across Calgary. I also collaborate with clubs at the University of Calgary through bake sales with revenue splits (donation and me). I currently have a part-time job to help fund the business and my education at SAIT and UofC.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

I work from home (home-based business) in the NW but can be found at any of my markets, including collaborative bake sales with clubs across campus at UofC.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

I would say to ask about my custom cakes, they are truly delectable and can elevate any event. I offer a variety of unique flavours and love when people request creative and unconventional ones. It’s super exciting!

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is connecting with people. My markets give me the opportunity to meet clients and build a community with them and other bakers. The worst part is the math. Dealing with all the calculations and ins and outs of managing a business. However, the positives outweigh the negatives a million times over.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

Why did the baker go to work? He kneaded the dough.
