What is your channel called and what is it about?
My channel is just my name, called Mary Beatrice! It’s basically about me navigating and romanticizing life in Calgary (and beyond). I showcase a lot of things to do in the city. From new events, experiences, cafes, etc. I also share more of the ups and downs of life, which I try to do so authentically behind the scenes.
When did you start it? What motivated you at the beginning?
I actually started in 2021, when I first moved to Calgary from Red Deer. Growing up from a smaller city, I was always craving for more things to do, and new people to meet. After a personal traumatic event happened to me, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I was very depressed, and did not know many people in Calgary. This motivated me to finally do something for myself, which I’m really passionate about: creating new memories through videos!
Who were you inspired by? Any influences?
I was honestly inspired by Jana. She was the first Calgarian influencer that I met; she invited me to attend a lunch event as my first “influencer event”. It was refreshing to hear her stories, and that truly sparked something in me! Five years later, she is one of my great friends!
How would you describe your audience?
I would describe them as truly authentic, supportive, open-minded and are like my long-time friends. They are like the friend I catch up with every now and then.
What is your creative process? Do you have people who work with you?
I am a mixture of Type A and B, I like to say sometimes I’m like a type C? Who knows! I like to get inspired by attending art shows, watching films, reading and listening to music. Ever since growing up, I always loved the idea of movies and even YouTube videos. I like showing my creativity through editing (surprisingly), the details and every tedious part of it all. I truly just want to have fun with it and notice the small details.
As for the more practical side of things, I do plan a concept and usually write it down. I cannot live without my planner/notebooks. Every idea, I write them down right away! I do not have anyone who works with me at the moment, but I would love to have a team one day! The goal is to potentially build my own marketing agency one day that showcases diversity, creativity, and room for all.
How do you monetize your content? Do you also have another job?
I monetize everything through social media. Being a content creator is my full-time career at the moment. I used to work in healthcare as an occupational/physical and recreational therapy assistant. In Canada, we don’t have a creator fund yet, I hope soon enough we will, so I mostly monetize through brand deals, TikTok live videos, my Facebook page, and I do some part-time social media coordinating/management freelancing for some brands as well. It’s a grind, but I love it!
What is your favourite piece of content you have created?
Ooooh! I love most of the content that I’ve created, to be honest! But here are the ones I’m most proud of:
Tourism Calgary Recent Video | Life in Calgary – Blue Sky City as a Content Creator | Tourism Red Deer | The day I “quit”…
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Meeting new people! I LOVE getting to know other people’s stories. Especially all of our small business owners! Also, travelling, I’ve recently been getting more opportunities to travel for work, and I will never take it for granted. I am so thankful for our community! I think the worst part is the more logistical parts of running a business. The paperwork and all of that good stuff, haha!
What are your future plans for your channel?
I hope to continue to inspire those who feel alone, lonely, and maybe feel some comfort through my channels. Money and having a platform is great, but at the end of the day, I want to inspire others, especially in my Filipino community to pursue something they’re passionate about outside of the norm. I want to be able to slowly tap into maybe doing more creative events, working with other local creators, vendors, etc. But my main goal is to start my own marketing agency, I’m even open to working for an agency!
