Tragedy Plus Time: Calgary Comedy Duo Double Vision

Brothers, comics, magicians, twins… Double Vision is a comedic team of brothers and magicians who love to amaze you and make you laugh. Living in Saskatoon they bring humour throughout the Prairies and across Canada. We got a chance to connect with Mitch and Mike of Double Vision to find out more.

Double Vision

How would you describe your comedy style?

We write some jokes based on the twin angle but a lot of the comedy comes from talking to audience members and seeing where it leads. Crowd work. Even performing close-up magic, we love to roll with what people say and do.

Who are some of your influences?

David Copperfield was HUGE when we were kids. His work ethic is still impacting our magic. On the funny side, Robin Williams and his ability to just take off and go.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Johnny Carson. Buddy Hacket. Don Rickles.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Bill Burr, Jimmy Carr.

What is your pre-show ritual?

One of us will say out loud, “focus, pause, inflexion”. And we eat a piece of raw bacon. Ok, the bacon thing may not happen in EVERY show.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

The Prime Minister’s Residence in Ottawa. We had a meal in the back yard (no joke) and were also given a private tour of the residence. We don’t know of anyone else that has done that.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

We created a frame (a hook) for an effect we call Robini (It has another name, but that’s a secret.) It’s original, has terrific visual bits, and some of the humour depends on what the audience volunteer does… it also has a surprise ending. “Surprise me” is an essential in magic and comedy.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Podcasts are great to hear comics just jazzing off one another.

Tell us a joke about your city.

We’re from Saskatoon, which is a lot better than Show Me Your Regina! Actual slogan Regina Tourism came up with. Good thing they weren’t in charge of the Roughrider promo.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

One of us auditioned for this year’s Canada’s Got Talent. An amazing experience. We have no idea about a broadcast date. It’s up to the producers.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
