Despite growing up in a “deeply unfunny” household where her humor was often dismissed, Calgary-based comedian Karla Marx has emerged as a distinctive voice in the comedy scene with her observational style centered on queer and trans experiences. Drawing inspiration from ’90s comedy staples like The Simpsons, SNL, and Monty Python, Marx has found her stride as both a performer and show organizer, typically hosting events where she showcases her material.
How would you describe your comedy style?
Observational with a queer and trans focus.
Who are some of your influences?
I was a kid of the 90s, so The Simpsons, SNL, Monty Python, those classics.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Probably Will Ferrell. It wasn’t really a house with a lot of comedy in it. There was the odd comedy movie but my family is deeply unfunny. There was a lot of “you aren’t funny” around the house, and I was like …. no I think I am.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Faris Hytiaa or Brittney Lyseng
What is your pre-show ritual?
Usually chasing around comedians to get them organized for a show. I’m usually hosting when I do a lot of my material.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
Great Outdoors Comedy Festival is wild. Having 7500 people there is a wild rush of adrenaline.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
We’ve Been Hacked is probably my favourite bit ever. It’s so deeply queer but also incredibly relatable to everyone who ever got caught doing something they shouldn’t have been by their parents.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
Doing shows! I love hearing people live.
Tell us a joke about your city
You can always tell when people were cool and fun in Calgary based on the landmarks that they used that do not exist anymore. People in Calgary navigate around the city based on five stores that don’t exist anymore and a bar that closed in 2004 but was SO GOOD.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
New album “Fruity” came out in April 2025 on Spotify and Apple Music.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
Faris Hytiaa or Bryan Sandberg
